Man- that is impressive. I am so greatful I learned from you guys and the "old crowd" down at Warrenton. Can't imagine trying to start out at this level. Well, yes I can...what a blast!

So... when are we going Bill fishing off Oregon?

Hooo jaaaa! I dare Mr. Bill to bust my pole holders off. They're metal. Plus I plan on rigging all poles with safety straps to eliminate the launching of the rockets.

Here Fishy Fishy!!

The carking of the offshore big gamefish would be impossible without the help of my friends.

Thank you all for the way you support each other. I did not know it then but the answer was already in hand. Just look around for your friends.

In our neighborhood you will not be dissappointed.

I would like to introduce myself and this thread kind of brings back fond memories.
I was introduced to Tuna fishing by one of the origional "Old Salts" back in the late 70's.
Does anyone remember the 42' Cris Craft Sea Skiff
"Literock" that fished out of Hammond.
Bill started his love of fishing back in the early 50's and ran a Salmon Troller out of Newport before mooving to Hammond.
Bill would fire up his twin Massy Fergeson, "sorry for the spelling" diesels and off we would go to the Tuna grounds. Top speed on the Literock was close to 15knots.
Can anyone remember Loran A.
That together with a RDF radio and his old Decca Radar would get us there and back.
We would get an old 2/8 and strap the thing to the stern covering boards and tie off our hand lines. We would use the same rubber snubbers with 150lb leader and the old red and white feather jigs. He was always proud of what he called the "Tooth Marks" on those jigs.
My first official Capn. adventure to the Tuna grounds was back in 1979 with my Father and Bill abord our 40'Sportfisher. We left the dock at 3:00am, hit fog at 6:00am, fished all day , ran out 73milles and never saw another boat till we returned back to Hammond that night. We boated 32 Tuna.
We would often go with the "Nepenthe" my dock partner in Warrenton, as a buddy boat but Denny had twin 8v92TA's and typically ran at 25knots plus, our 671N's would top out at 17knots. We never saw much of Denny once we left the docks.
He would always back at the dock before us. There wasn't much visual interaction in those days between boats, sure there would be an occasional Commercial sighted, but most of the time we fished by ourself. That same summer we adventured out several more times, most trips ended in bad weather.
Other than a few Charter Boats and the the above mentioned private boats and Commercials, there were a very few boats that would fish for Tuna.

In todays world of new electronics, loran c and Waas Gps, it kind of gives us/Me a false sense of security. One thing drilled into my head by these Old Salts was to always travel with a Buddy Boat, never go out alone and trust your electronics, redundancy of navigation aids is always a plus.
Some of those people are memories, but they are always along for the ride.

John I forgot about the Tuna origins on the Salty Dogs. You guys have turned the unknown into the comfortable. I remember that thread. I haven't been out there much with you guys but have learned enough to go after tuna with confidence. If a guy picks his days there is no reason to be intimidated by the ocean. I am ready for a 100 mile boat but need to get some things in order first. No really, I may be shopping as early as late winter. Thanks everyone for their contributions. SST maps, bouy links and that satalite wave chart and tech. You guys have sparked a huge love for the sea in me.

And Kamloops, thank for your post it is a little misty in here now.

I have spent many a day and night at sea, but the salty dogs have made my private trip the best. I am looking into getting a big blue boat. And i can't wait to get my first taste of carcking tuna with blood everywhere. What PILAR describes as total carnage...
