Default Spread\'em out

I just know in my heart that it's going to lay down this weekend. When it does I'd love to see a bunch of us spread out over about five miles on a serious tuna hunt out of Depoe Bay. What ever day looks the best forecast wise I'm there, who else will be with me?

Am I wrong to think that the warm water is still there and that it's just simply the very surface that has cooled? I just can't imagine going from 63 degrees yesterday down to 57 today without there being some warm water hidden underneath.

If you experts could clue me in I'd appreciate it.

Also, another question for the tuna pros, let's say it is cold out there now, where do the tuna go? Obviously not all the way back to Cali so do they just go deep and not rise to lures? Based on the latest SST I wouldn't think they would head west because of the cold water also.

Please help me understand oh wise ones!

They are around, for a while at least. I have caught them in water as cold as 57 degrees. Keep in mind that albacore spend most of their time cruising between 100 and 300' and come to the surface to feed. It isn't 60 degrees at 300'. I think they are after the surface forage that is available in warm water. When the bait goes, so do the fish. Where? They follow the warm water. And tuna can cover some ground. If you never sleep and you swim 30 miles an hour, you can rack up some milage.

You can hit em in 57 and green, but only if there is 59 and blue nearby. And imho, color is more important than temp.

Dont know about the bouy, but I just looked at Coastwatch and I think your seeing cloud cover temps... somewhere I read that fog will fool the satilite in some cases.

In this pic from the 25th, what looks like cool water on the left side of the picture is actually low cloud cover.

Yes, I agree with UG here. I don't think that the blue there is cold water. It's either the fog, or it's just cold cloud tops. Looking at the last readable Oregon Terrafin shot, the blue was not there at all.

Just where do you folks think Terrafin gets their data? You don't think they have their own IR cameras up there in space do you? Terrafin just averages and processes the data you are seeing on the NOAA passes. I've watched both for a while (years) now and you can get a feel for what terrafin will show in the future (for money) by watching the actual NOAA shots.
It is convienent to have the conversion to F instead of c, but Terrafin does not have data that is not available free. They average and convert - that's it folks. It's kinda like (but not really) the dif between following the gps and reading a chart. Ones much easier, but one's failsafe (sort of).
If it's cloudy/foggy, the sat's show black. After a few days of this Terrafin just says, no update. They can't get new data from a blank screen. That water out there offshore is cold. Also cold along the coast in tight little swirls south (upwelling?). Those eddys have been there for a while. Watch it, you will understand.
The 3 am (6/26) "real time" (as I like to call it) showed the fog that DBD was talking about clearly. It followed the warm water mass like white on rice. Warm water, NW wind coming off cold water = fog. The NOAA sat showed that as black (no Water temp reading).
Check it out folks, you'll learn and it's free. Frustrating, but free!
Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying there aren't tuna out there. I got a note that the ******* are selling fresh Tuna off the boats in Warrenton. I am saying that the warm water finger that was inshore and clear past the CR is beginning to break down due to that NW wind. Check the coast watch shot up north (WA and CR area) It's fading so... Lets go fishing!!

Don't dispair.....even if the water has turned over, the tuna are still here. The edges are easier to read, easier to find and thats where the fish are feeding. Start fishing when it gets 57 and stop fishing when it gets colder than 55. I think the good edges are more important than the temp. Hopefully the weather will grace us with a week long calm and we can all head out for the hunt.

This is pretty typical of a big northwest blow. A couple days of 25-30kts will really drop your surface temps.

Dont know what you saw, but the temp looks pretty good to me, and the break is getting even more defined. You could darn near catch em off the beach at barview.

Wish the forecast looked better.

UG, I think Greg is referring to the very latest satellite shot

web page

Also, the weather bouy shows the sharp drop on the inside anyway.

All this being said, consider that there has been such a huge warm water push from the south, that it may not take long at all for temps to rise again once the big blow is over.

Brad- the real time don't look like that, it's fading fast up North. Cloud cover over the southern strip so Terrafin can't update that section. Your looking at leftovers on the composite. Doesn't really matter if the wind forecast holds now does it? :depressed:

PS- I guess I'l lbe scraping the rust off the Salmon gear here real soon.

Mel,

I understand where terrafin gets there data, but I dont understand what you are saying about the rest of it.

The 3 AM (6/26) is cloud obscured. Its bad data. If the low clouds and fog are within the temprature range that they are measuring, they show up in color, but it is cloud temp, not SST. If it is outside the temprature range for the pic it shows as black. You can proove this to yourself by changing the range scale on the coastwatch site and make water areas black on purpose. The IR image you are seeing is not of clouds/water like a visual image, but of temprature only.

For example, you can clearly see the low clouds and fog on the following visual photo:

And on the corrisponding SST photo you can see where the low clouds and fog look like cool water.

Zoom in on the same shot...

What looks like cold water on the left side of the pic is bad data, low clouds / fog that happen to be within the temprature range of the image.

Terrafin understands this is bad data and blanks it out. Go back to the terrafin processed version of the same image.

www.terrafin.com/sstview/samples/freeoregon.htm

All they did was blank out bad data. And fill in a few spots on the good data side of the image. So I guess I dont understand what your saying about the coastwatch "realtime" data versus the terrafin "composite", as they are the same image.

I think you are reading way to much into the coastwatch image(s) and seeing ghosts (fog and clouds) that dont really exist. I dont see how you can read anything useful into the "realtime" 6/26 3 AM shot. Just my $.02

Guys, note the message across the top of the Terrafin data says, "Terrafin Software 2003. Unauthorized reproduction, public display or online display is prohibited." I know this chart is the free version available to anyone who cares to look but, unless Terrafin has specifically authorized it's reproduction here, we can't post it.

I don't think that posting a link to the site would be a problem, we just can't reproduce their data on ifish.

Sorry.

UG- You may be right about some of the fog/clouds "fooling" the IR. The black areas are definate cloud cover. Is the fog fooling the water temp, or is the fog there because of the water temp? Chicken or egg? Fog can be warmer air over cooler water, or cooler air over warmer water.
I like this discussion, I've wondered about some of the differences in the SST's before. There's another site that is a composite, and it is usually different than the Terrafin or the NOAA snapshots. Lets figure it out!
Link: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/PSB/EPS/SS...washngtn.c.gif

My point really was the the warm water was breaking up fast from the North end. :depressed: If you look at the WA closeup you can see that.

I don't really care who can prove they're right. The ACTUAL temp. at the Rockpile has dropped 9deg. in the last 5 days. Bouy 46005 has only varied about 3 deg. from 55.9 to about 58.5. Bouy 46002 has stayed pretty consistant around 58 deg. Those are facts do what you want with them, unless I'm wrong.

Terrafin Oregon

In viewing the subscription image, it looks like the warm water has moved offshore, closer to the 125 line than what it looks like here. On a more positive note, it is still out there, and looks good. The swell is supposed to turn SW in a few days, so maybe it'll help push it back inland as well.

I'm hoping to have Sea Jypzee up and fishable by July 4th weekend if anyone needs a seat. Not sure yet what type of fishing it'll be, but should be out there somewhere.

It means that the warm water was pushed a few miles further offshore, which is why the Stonewall Bank bouy temps dropped, and it means that the phantom cold water was really low clouds that were in the tempprature range to show up in the picture, it means that anywhere along the temp break would be a good place to look for tuna, and it means that crabbait should go unedit my previous post.

On a slightly larger scale, it means that we got warm water from here to Hawaii, and its looking like an aweful good tuna season!

UG- I don't get it. The close in views on coastwatch don't show nearly the water temp of that NOAA view you posted?
Same Sats right? Is that the low res view? Where did you get that one that's in deg F ?
Unless I got my conversion wrong the links I posted are showing 3-5 degrees colder than the same date/time stamp as the one you posted. I DON'T GET IT!

Mel, Its MAGIC.....

Remember the color relates to a temprature not the other way round.... The temps are the same, I changed the color scale to highlight the water of intrest. I made the max temp 64 degrees farenheight so the anything 63 degrees or warmer is dark red, the upper end of the color scale avalible.

First

On the visable picture page... (the one that showed the earthquake) there is a box at the bottom where you can choose 1.1 KM resolution, 2.5 KM resolution, or 5.0 KM resolution. The higher the number, the lower the resolution, and the wider the view. Choose the 5.0 KM setting and you will get the picture I posted.

Second

On the SST page hit the tab at the bottom of the page that says "Customize Preview". Change the units to Farenheit and change the minimum value to something like 45-50 and the maximum value to something like 63+. Play around with it and you can really highlight certain water tempratures.

Mel, at the bottom of the Coastwatch image is the "customize preview" command. So you can not only change from C to F, but also set the boundaries such as 56 to 65. When you change the boundaries, the image can look very different (i.e. colors and scale are different). Try dinking around with different settings....

edit: don't you just love it when you post the same answer as someone else while he has already hit the button? I'm really just a copy-cat with a master's degree

Muhahahahhaha.... Now I can make my very own TUNA water any time I want....Muhhahahahaha!

Thanks, I still don't get why the links I posted APPEAR to have 58-59 degree water at best  It is (deg C x 8/5) + 32 = deg F isn't it?

No kidding Mark, bring on the Hendrix - this stuff is heavy man.

So the near shore layer of cold water is due to upwelling?

If so we are looking at the engine that drives our salmon fisheries, feeds our bait fish and even the tuna that hunt the boundary.

So, is anyone going out of Depoe on Sun.? I'm still holding out hope for a semi calm ocean and want to head for Tunatown. If things look too crappy I'll just troll around for salmon.

Hey Gregotis,

I'm out this weekend, but would consider a run over the 4th. You know where I am and my cell. I'll pull and trailer to Depoe or possibly just troll that way for salmon the day before.

Well, it looks like I'm out for fishing, especially tuna, this week and next weekend. I have a number of things to do on the boat that pretty much require 2 people to do, and at this point in time, it's just me , so the things I need to do are going to take longer. Ie., putting up radar dome, antennas, fixing carborator (may have to have it done. :depressed: ), and just getting the rest of the boat ready.

Sea Jypzee, you may find a number of willing helpers if the wind blows the gang off the tuna hunt Wed, Thurs, Fri. Not much to do when you can't go offshore because of sea state. I have spent a few mornings in the Dopey Bay parking lot after a first light reality check.

Help can probably be had for a ride to the fishing grounds. How 'bout it any of you pups free to lend a hand?

Pilar - I would be happy to give a ride to fishing grounds for help with getting the boat up and running! I won't be available on wednesday (working that day), but thursday/fri/sat/sun will be around and ready to do it.

Thanks much for the offer and call to arms!
