WINNERS! Photo Contest #16 RESULTS!
For this contest, I'm looking for portraits with depth, candid or posed, that relay an emotion, a depth of experience, with eyes that could tell stories. I want you to go beyond cute snapshots - take pics of someone telling a story or sharing a moment but their expression should be telling. Tears, laughter, stoicism, wrinkles, twinkles of the eye. It can be one person or many, but their faces must be the photo's subject. Black and white photos often do better in this regard, deemphasizing the color while portraying the human experience. Examples of what I'm looking for may be found in National Geographic or Google "Yousuf Karsh". 85mm is an optimum lens power, and don't forget to use a wider aperature to blur the backround unless it's not distracting to have the backround in focus.
The rules are the same. Two pics max, nothing from prior contests, usual size limit, and pics must be hosted on ifish.
The contest will end midnight October 11. I really want your best folks - pick up the camera and shoot the card full. Be wise shooting street candids - my pro photo doctor friend has gotten himself in trouble more times than I care to remember taking pics of strangers.
Thanks and have fun! Doc

This picture was taken July 15, 2005 with a Canon Powershot S230 on auto setting.
It's more than a face but I've always liked the photo. She said yes.

I took this during the Rockaway Beach 4th of July parade. I don't know who she is and didn't realize what a great shot I had until I got home. Maybe someone will recognize her and send the pic to her parents.

Re: Photo Contest #16: Faces
Ok here is my two
This one just cause she was so cute when she was little, and Happy
I must say I was blessed with a baby that was never grumpy, she is now 6 and starting to show signs of some independance but still a great Daughter .
This one I made Black and white with photoshop, just thought it looked good that way, she had the cutest profile.
All pictures taken with Kodak DC240 Zoom, one of the first digitals to hit the market
And all pics taken by a very proud Dad.

This picture was taken while during relief work in Iraq in 2003. We visited an elementary school about 1-hour from Baghdad. Take a look closely at this girl's green eyes - not your typical Iraqi girl.

First entry from me...
This is my step-daughter Sabrina in her Tualatin High School PowderPuff flag football game from last week. Sabrina's freshman team played the sophomores and she was the middle linebacker. Here, Sabrina just made a tackle and is handing the flag back to the sophomore running back...

Re: Photo Contest #16: Faces
In the interest of constructive discussion...
I really like the photos posted, but if not already done, I would ask ifish photographers to consider cropping or color adjustment to really emphasize the finished composition.
For instance, Kaz... I desatured to black/white, upped the sharpness and contrast, slightly unbrightened, and cropped this one to bring the eyes to the top left third quadrant.
You are allowed to adjust any of your entries for more powerful or artistic look, within reason of course.
Or leave them alone. Either way, have fun!

Re: Photo Contest #16: Faces
Remember, "You must be both the person who took the photograph and owner of the copyright in all photos entered in the contest." This rule is back in effect since we have moved past the kid's contest. One very nice pic above has a PM sent.
Also, please include your camera, lens, settings, etc. This is supposed to be educational after all...
Keep em posted!

Re: Photo Contest #16: Faces
I know this first one probably isn't what Dr. Strangelove had in mind, it's my son at 6 months old, and he doesn't have that "life experience" hiding behind his eyes. But I think it's a great shot of his face, and shows the bright future ahead of him!!
The second one is also my son (what's cuter than a baby face!), and my mother-in-law on the day he was born. I was still in recovery, so my husband was the actual photographer. But he's an ifisher too, so maybe we can just consider it his entry!
Oh, and the first one was taken with my Nikon D50 and the second was our old Fuji point-and-shoot.

Re: Photo Contest #16: Faces
This is Barney (fishkisser) my husband and I have never seen anyone so happy. This is how he makes me feel inside. It was taken with our digital camera that I had placed on the hood of the truck.
I guess its only fair...
Barney says he does not like this pic of himself so he talked me into putting up one of his favorites.
"Are you talking to ME!" (LOL)

First the tug at the heartstrings one.. Henry and his Great Aunt Linda just after birth....
Nikon D40
F4.5 1/160 ISO 800
Next picture is simply one that I really like. I have other kids ones, etc to tug at heartstrings, but I think this one is just a darn good photo. I simply love the expression on Dane's face, and it captures exactly the element I was going for. Modern Americana.
Nikon D40
