Anchor mounting
Greetings,
I am having problems deciding on the best anchor mounting system for my boat. It has an open bow that is sealed from the rest of the boat and drained by scuppers. There is a large sealed anchor box. I don't believe an anchor roller system will work for me due to the fact the anchor line will prevent the box from sealing. I suppose a guy could attach/detach his line each time, but that seems a little crazy.
At this point I am planning on mounting a cleat(s) on the bow with a through bolt/backer plate set up. Would two be better, or one perpendicular to the center line of the boat?
I plan on buying either a danforth or bruce style anchor, if it matters.
Here is a pic of the bow.
Any other ideas?
Joe

Re: Anchor mounting
The Bruce will set much much better than a Danforth style. Also - you can buy a 22 lb Bruce and get a suston roller assembly that is the cat's meow for it. Stows perfect, has a retainer pin and rolls right off when released (and right back on.
Just put a Deck pipe with a lid on the locker lid. It wil lstick up a couple inches (trip hazard?), but you can leave your rope/chaing attached (on both ends) and feed it in and out. I had this setup on my 24 and it was beautiful.
Lemme know if you want more details.

Re: Anchor mounting
Mel,
I googled and could not find anything on "suston roller". Do you have a link or any other info. How safe would it be to have a deck pipe with a lid in my style of boat?
Thanks for your reply,
Joe

Re: Anchor mounting
The bruce or a delta will work much better than a danforth on rocky bottom, The Danforth would be my last choice for rocky or even gravel bottom. Unless the flukes bury they are usless.
The river anchor Pitch was describing will work well in rocks but won't provide as much in softer bottom.
Yes- you still need a cleat.
PS- I had my 24 (big heavy glass pig) i nthe San Juans and out of Port Hardy. Never had to set the Bruce twice and never broke loose.

Re: Anchor mounting
Sheesh- if Icould type it would be easier...how about a "custom" roller. ALl the big Marine Supply Catalogues carry them in the Anchor/Roller sections.
The deck pipe I used is very solid SS and the lid is spring loaded to stay closed. If you are pulling rope then it slides to the side and stays latched open. The chain feeds through a small slot in the body/lid so it can stay attached on both ends.
Not sure what you mean by safe. If your worried about water, won't get much thru it. Your anhcor locker should be self draining. You'll get more water with the rope than you ever would though the deck pipe.
AS far as a trip, if it's far enoguh forward on the hatch and you have the chain running from the end of the anchor down to the pipe, it should be OK. THe chain will mark it as a "no walk" zone anyway.
I'll get some info for ya and post.

Re: Anchor mounting
I would mount a jamb cleat on the bow and a regular cleat horizontal on the rail behind it. Mount a bow chock on either side to adjust your position in a hog line.
Buy a 25lb Columbia River rocker anchor with break-away, 20'(or more) of galvanized chain and two lengths of anchor rope, 300' and 150'. Get the EZ pull anchor system and you are covered for nearly all of the conditions you may find in this area.
Use the anchor box for tool storage or other stuff you don't need often and put a milk box on the bow to hold the rope.
I'd consider Motion Marine's rocker anchor roller/holder if you don't want the anchor scratching up yer pretty new boat. Good luck!

Re: Anchor mounting
Mel,
Thanks for the links. I have seen the rollers before, I just didn't have a good idea concerning the deck pipes. Now I need to start mentally preparing myself to put more holes in my boat. Anywhoo, thanks.

Re: Anchor mounting
Pitch is right (on the River Anchor or Rocking Chair as they are called) if you are trying to anchor for Sturgeon in the CR up high (above PDX). It won't hold you as well as a Bruce in soft stuff (sand/mud). If you are going to Bonne, you don't want the set up I was refering to above. A Bruce won't grab the rocks as well and you can't rig up a breakaway chain through that anchor roller (not an have it work right.
So... watcha planning on doing there guy?

Re: Anchor mounting
I am a San Juan Islands guy, so I won't be spending much time trying to belly up to a hogline on the CR. Mostly out of fear.
Maybe with the rocky San Juan's a danforth may be better. I do like the idea of a bow mounted roller with a deck pipe to my locker. Here is another silly question, with the roller, how is the line secured. Does a guy still need to mount cleats?

How big is the boat? Where are you going in the San Juans?
