A confession...and a concern
Now that I'm thinking a little clearer and reflecting back over Saturday's events, I want to tell you Dogs that I don't feel I (we) handled that too grandly. Leaving some fellow Salties stranded at Newport in the dark of night, not knowing that they had even made it back, was not too cool - and decidedly not Salty Dog-like.
I apologize to all of you for not firing up my truck and coming to find you. Admittedly, I was boxed in, but one word would have had rigs jockeying and cleared out of the way. The fact that it was inconvenient for us to do that is a poor excuse indeed. It won't happen again.
But there are some other obligations as well. Near as I can tell, Puffin knew you were there and knew you needed transportation, yet all he managed to do was drive by Fish Camp, roll down his window and shout that HE had caught a 120 lb fish. Then off he went, leaving a bunch of guys stranded. That didn't strike me as up to par for a true Salty Dog.
And you guys that stayed out soooo long, pushing the limits so hard that you had to return to a different port, we can only say that we lost contact with you, didn't know where you were, and sort of mentally passed the baton to others who might be close enough to be in contact.
Believe me, I'm not trying to sidestep the blame for not demanding of myself that we find you before the night was over, but I think there's an obligation on your part not to put any of us in that position unless there is a true emergency - which there very well might have been.
I'm new to the drill, guys, but my apology is sincere. I'm sorry that you had the night you did. I won't let that happen again.

The hard lessons are the ones we never forget. Assuming of course you get a second chance to apply the lesson.
Good post Skein!

Re: A confession...and a concern
There are two sides to every story.
Contempt prior to investigation, by not having all the facts, is an uncomfortable position to defend.
I was not there, but have heard a little bit of both sides.
More will be revealed, and hopefully this situation can be avoided in the future.
Peace, Tom

Re: A confession...and a concern
Skein,
I don't think there are any hard feelings from any of the stranded crew, other than we'd like to find out why Puffin ran off so quick after he offered us a ride. In fact he convinced John to stay out longer because he said he'd give him a ride.
Anyway, we knew what we were doing when we headed south and should've made plans at that time. Unfortunately we didn't have phone numbers for a lot of the Ifishers at Fishcamp. I even had my Salty Dog list and nobody was on the list.
I think at the very least we need to get that thing updated.
Thanks for your concern Skein. I don't know about John but I can't really think of a reason why we'd do that again unless we were in trouble. Had it not been an open halibut day we probably would've just stayed near Depoe.
On a funny side note, Jimmy Carl Black was on my boat that day and when we got back to the dock he said "you weren't kidding in your email when you said we'd probably be out all day fishing!"
Sorry if we created any concern but believe me, we sure as heck were trying to get ahold of somebody/anybody!

Re: A confession...and a concern
I thought about the very same thing when Ocean Blue posted about them being stranded. We drove right in between Rod and John on the way back in from the Pile late Saturday afternoon and by the sounds of it, we should have stopped and fished with them. I had heard them chattering on the radio about putting in at Depoe, but planning on taking out at Newport. The thought of getting keys and doing the shuttle never crossed my mind, but it sounds like they already had that taken care of.
Sounds like they had plenty of time to clean their fish.

Re: A confession...and a concern
Yes there was some poor planning on the ground side, but i was not worried about it. We had a great day fishing and the company was awesome...
With that said with everything that happened, it happened for a reason. I called my wife @ 10:00 and told her i would not be comming home. She was a little upset but alright with the safety issue, if we would have been back at fish camp by 10:00 i probably would have pushed the envelope and driven the 2 hours home and who knows what would have happened. All that happened in newport added to my first expierence with the SALTY DOGS. Some people might not have handled it as well as the group of us did, but i think you need to have a pretty good attitude (or at least sence of humor) to hang with this bunch.
Oh yeah Jimmy Carl Black never immagined that his little Subaru would get all of us out of there, but the hike that PILAR did got us home.
Here is to Mustang Sally
And PILAR appologized for the planning thing, and i say BOO to that. I enjoyed every minute of my weekend and I hope to do it again.

Re: A confession...and a concern
Updating the SD contact list is a good idea.
I for one have had some cell phone issues and my number has changed twice. Plus the fact that I incinerated the phone that held all your numbers in memory.
I had had a full day by Saturday eve and had put some considerable milage on, but given the chance to come to the aid of my bretheran I would have headed south at the drop of a hat.
Shall we start a post for updated info?
Until then please update my contact numbers as follows.
Home 503-879-9011
Cell 503-580-0404 (new number as of yesterday)

Re: A confession...and a concern
Not sure I understood the gist of it (thread), but it doesn't matter.
Evedently the two rig's and trailers I reported to the Depoe Bay Coast Guard Saturday night at about 9:30pm was Rod's and John's. They just blew it off saying it was probably someone mooring their boats in the bay. I had my doubts though.
Wished you guy's would have called me and I would have run the whole 12 miles or so to transport you back to Depoe Bay.

Re: A confession...and a concern
I know that when the urge to go hits, it is hard to resist. I know what Skein is talking about. When mother duck takes the chicks out, she counts and makes sure that when she comes back, she has the same number.
When we go out, (I haven't been out with you guys this year), it is important not only to stay in radio contact, but actual eye contact, otherwise there is very little safety in numbers. It only takes a few moments of things going wrong, for the safety in numbers factor to arise, but if no one isaround it isn't much good.
I don't know what the details were and it isn't any of my business and in this case all is well that ends well. But it is a group decision made befor anyone leaves the dock that you are going to stick together, we just need to assign a Momma Duck.
Looking forward to meeting many of you over the next few weeks. Will attempt to hit Tuna Town this weekend w Pilar and group.

Re: A confession...and a concern
I think we're all on the same wavelength - watching out for our fellow Ifishers. My chagrin was realizing that I was a lousy 8 miles away while a bunch of my tired (and smelly) buddies were standing around a parking lot wondering how to get from here to there. I didn't know if they were taking the 5mph tow back to harbor or still yarding in the big ones, but the fact is, I didn't go find out. It's not so much what they did as what I didn't do.
I shudda checked.
But then Pilar would have missed that 5-ticket ride in the scarlet pony-car.
Hey Jimmy, did you ever get your Subaru aired out?

Re: A confession...and a concern
Had a buddy that was fishing his dory out of Depoe Bay one time and lost his
steering (Hi Greg!!). He called a cab in Newport to drive him back up to Depoe
Bay. I know, not as much fun as having another Dog give you a ride in a Subaru,
but it *is* an option!

Re: A confession...and a concern
Tried the cab thing. the number that PILAR got was a portland number, and then when he ahold of a cab it was 47$. Sound like thumbing it worked...
I agree about the mother hen thing. It would have been nice if somebody would have checked on us. Or even inquired on why we were not anywhere to be found.

Great point Skein, but don't beat yourself up over it. This is how we learn, and next time I am sure it will be handled differently.

Re: A confession...and a concern
Skein don't get so down on this the next time we will be more prepared for this and we all learned, We need to do a better pretask plan. We will all be laughing about this on the next Hali-But season. Besides we only missed a great Buffalo roast, mud bug, cheese cake dinner, but the left overs were to die for. Well I just made my self hungry I better go. LOL I'm glad your doing better Skein.

I'm glad you liked them. The wife went a little wild on the spice so I wasn't sure if it would be to dad blamed hot!

It doesn't take much convincing for us to whip up more so let's do it!

Re: A confession...and a concern
Hey Corrirod, we told Pilar that we would give him a ride to Depoe bay. Never saw him after that. We hung around the marina for a couple of hours after we got in, and that was pretty late. I feel bad now knowing you all were stranded...

Re: A confession...and a concern
No problem Tag-a-long. It was a self inflicted problem that we should've planned a little better before we took off. Lesson learned.

Hey, Hoggemin, speaking of mudbugs - Mmmmmmmm!!!
Corrirod, you da man! That was a real treat. Next time we all get together and you get a wild hair to build us some etouffe, I'll pony up some $$ to help offset the cost. That is good stuff.
