Default Vancouver Island BT

This hunt took place on Northern Vancouver Island and I thought I would post it here. I mostly post in the Salty Dogs, but thought why not here as well.

The BT on the Island are a pure strain of BT, with no interior mulie influances. A good buck here will score 110-120 and weight 150-170 live. They live just like their coastal cousins, in the thick wet stuff that they love. We hunt a mixture of cutblocks, second growth and old growth timber. My fav way is to get up high and glass then move to the next spot and repeat, then when the sun hits, start to sneak along the timber edge, zig-zagging back and forth from the cut block to the timber.

Yesterday the glassing payed off as I found this buck bedded on a ridge, doing the classic "if I lay low, you cannot see me while I am bedded" pose. He was about 175 yards away, looking three quarters on. The first shot hit him just behind the shoulder, travelling through one lung, his liver, paunch before exiting and braking in back leg below the hock. When he got up and stagered around I put another one behing his shoulder, which knocked him to the ground.

as he lay

he was a nice 3x3 with decent tine length and spread. A good buck for the Island

Packaged up and ready for home

Some of the country where we hunt

a small berry bear that was very lucky there was deer on the back

all in all it was good morning, some meat for the freezer and a good buck to boot. One down and two to go.....

Cheers

When we fished out of Port Hardy we noticed some deer on the Gordon Islands.

Are they all over those Islands? What a swim!

Hey David

No this was just outside of home, about 20 minutes away, Keogh lake.

I am taking a late season muley hunt, not sure where to go though. Used to hunt the Ranch, but it go so busy that we just quite (one of the few areas that does get pressure) Used to be great place, but have not hunted there for 5 years. Need to find a new place, maybe the North Thompson or around Clinton.

Enjoy Ottawa, must be busy with the election coming up.

Cheers

Wow! That's a real monster for the islands. I remember seeing deer on Cypress Island in the San Juans when hunting that looked like grayhounds with antlers. That's a dandy.

Yeah, there are some spots up there where we see very little people and more bucks than anywhere else...bit of a hike in (and especially out with the buck on your back), but definitely worth it. Every year we've gone up we've limited, most 2x2 but i got a beauty 4x4 last time we went...and pops missed a MONSTER! Next time I see ya I can give ya a heads up where..or send an email. Dont mind good guys who can keep secrets like urself knowing where the bucks are haha.

I grew up in Port Alice. What a place to live. Wish I could have stayed there and hunted and fished my life away. Rains 360 days a year but what a great place. Glad to see that you found a buck to harvest. Thanks for sharing.
