Friday, Andy Coho was nice enough to take me Halibut fishing out of Garibaldi. I met him and a friend of his at 5 am. The weather was calm and looked to be a nice day.
We headed out and I put on my SO Suspenders. The bar was very calm. That was the start of a nice day on the big blue. The ocean stayed fairly flat the whole day and at one point one could have gone skiing out there. It took just over an hour to get out 28 miles to our spot. When we got to our spot there were a whole fleet of boats there. I had brought the new TLD 20 two speed reels and new rods I had just recived and was eager to use them. Andy baited them up and down we went. It didn’t take long and WHAM fish on. I had the first fish on and put on the fighting harness and belt I had brought. The fight was on. As I was fighting it WHAM fish on. Andy hooked up and we had a double. As I was fighting my fish the arming pull handle on my PFD got caught in the handle of my reel and POP goes the PFD. I really looked the site. Fighting a fish with a fully inflated PFD with a fighting vest around it hooked to a rod and reel. Well the guys got a really big laugh out of it anyway. That is why you don’t see me wearing a PFD in the picture.. I had to deflate it, re-arm it and then put it back on,..
It took quite a while before we got the third fish, but we did come home with three nice fatties and a shark which Andy hooked and finally long released.
It was a great day on the water with neat people.
Thanks again Andy for the Trip.
I got home and had an e-mail from Captain Dennis of Tillamook Bait Company to go out and try it again Saturday. With the success we had Friday, how could I resist. I gladly said I will be there. So I met him and his daughter Myra at 5 am at their store in Tillamook.
I put on my PFD and so did Myra and we headed out. WOW!! was it a different day. The water was rough. The trip that took just over an hour on Friday, took 2 ½ hours to get to the same spot.
Myra had eaten some bad Yogurt the night before and it really got to her on the way out. For a girl who had never been sea sick before, she made up for it on one trip. She was miserable but said keep fishing. Most adults in her condition would have said go in.
We bounced around out there like a ping pong ball, but kept fishing. Captain Dennis finally said I know where to go and we pulled up and moved to a different drift. Within 5 minutes he had FISH ON. Good spot and bait. During his fight I get a bite and FISH ON. Wow, a double. He got his fish in but mine got off about half way up. Darn that was a lot of work to loose it.
Captain got one more on but lost it on the way up. The sea was starting to get rougher & the weather was turning bad so we decided it was time to go in.
All in all it was a great day because of the people I was with. Myra is a real trooper &. Captain Dennis is a terrific captain and great guy.
Thanks for the trip and the Halibut.
Sturgeon Tom
PS After two days of being on the ocean I was supprised to see very few people ware there PFD'S. :depressed: Just and observation.
