Default I have got a confession

For the first time I got seasick. I am Forty years old and have been out on the ocean for as long as I can remember. Must have done well over a hundred maybe thousands of trips over the years and never got this bad where I had to chum the waters for my fishing buds. My loss is there gain.
Anyway I had been on medication for high cholesterol and one side effect says it make you nauseus. Well throw a boat ride in there and I guess it put me over the top. I talked to the doc today and they are gonna try the patch on me. I am not giving up fishing out there for a little illness.

Anyone else do the patch thing ot just plain dramamine?

Hey Smiley, don't feel bad. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1700 days at sea over 36 of my 42 years, and have been "immune" from seasickness since I was 16. But once in a great while, the right combination of things come together and make me puke. Last time was when buddy's boat had a (diesel) fuel problem, and I had my head in the engine room while helping bleeding out air & changing filters 4 or 5 times within an hour, boat rocking real good all the while. Well guess what happened? Dang I knew it was coming and I couldn't believe it. So lets just get it over with. You know, women do not have a monopoly on the physiology changing with the years. Hang in there..Mark

That sucks Smily. My wife Vickie also got sick Saturday. I think it was just one of those days on the ocean. We used the patch. I worked for me but not for her, go figure. I was starting to feel a little funny and Keta gave me some of his ginger. It worked almost instantly.

Marc mc, I don't know anyone that likes the smell of diesel fumes. Following cars that are diesel on the road sucks let alone on the open ocean.

Sorry to hear about your wife Woody. I will be taking ginger snaps with me from now on and saltines. The swell wasn't that bad. Only about 4 feet. I have been out on much worse days. I remember going out one day and the swell was 10-12 feet. No wind waves, just huge rollers and glassy conditions. The charter boat was a 55' and you coudn't see anthing in between swells. A lot of people got sick that day. I thought it was a lot of fun.

I should have clarified - I was talking about the vapor from raw diesel fuel, not the exhaust. Fuel vapors, whether gas or diesel, are central nervous system depressants, with all the accompanying possible effects (nausea, headache, etc.).

Yes you can get some unburned fuel in diesel exhaust, especially when the engine is still warming up. But most of that stuff is a mix of sulphur, oxides of nitrogen, and "PNAs".

Smily was on my boat, and I tried to help with suggestions like: stand up, look at the land, get your face into the wind, have some ginger.

I got seasick 5 times when I was a teen and got over it, but I remember you feel like you want to die. I have sympathy.

Smily has been on the ocean with me several times without even feeling qwezy. Must have been a combination of medication, lack of sleep, empty stomach, plug-cutting herring, motion of the ocean, the thrill of victory, and agony of da-feet.

I think he needs to get out more often.

Let's do it again in a couple of weeks!!!

I know the feeling. I used to get sick everytime out when I was younger. Now it's just occasional. First you are afraid you are going to die and after a while you're dissapointed that you didn't. Hang in there Andy.

Smiley - Seasickness is an interesting phenomenon
few people escape, even frequent sailors. I knew a navy captian that always got sick at sea.

As we get older our inner ear changes, as does our balance and seasickness is one result.

Check the thread on seasickness on this board and you will see that you are in good company. If it ruins your trip, that's a bad thing, if you can get over it and still fish then you are alright. On the posted threads there were a number of remedies to help if it should continue. Being the strange thing that it is some remedies might not work and others will you keep trying until you find one.

Hope you can get it under control. See you "on the boat again".

I have felt nacious before just going down on the port docks in the morning (charter boat row) with all that deisel in the air.

Smily,

Hey, it happens! It was just a fluke and probably won't happen again. Just don't be paranoid about it when you go next.

As I told you that day, I have heard the charter boat captains joke about it saying; "I'll probably get sea sick", when they have not been out for a long winter stretch. You haven't been out for a long time. It effects you more then and as I said, it was just a fluke.

Sure enjoyed fishing with you on Saturday and would like the opportunity again someday. This is Andy, right?

Thanks for all the kind words. One day of sickness is not gonna keep me off big blue. I have lived and played at the beach all my life and have loved it way much to say good by. Honestly I can't wait to get back out there. I'm hoping it was just a fluke but only time will tell. If a body changes, I guess we have to adjust the best we can.

Dan that was me. I think what did me in was when we were bottom fishing and sitting on the bow seemed to have the greatest or even exagerated rock and roll motion going on. I know I think I'm just looking for excuses but not coming up with any good ones right now. Any ways would love to get out there and fish with ya again. Thanks again for your hospitatity and showing us around in your neck of the woods.

I think the most amazing thing was out of the 8 hrs on the water that day,it was strange to hit me in the 6th or 7th hour. Not from the first or second hr.

Anyway's looking to get right up on that horse again to overcome this.

Don't feel to bad Andy. We were out around the 300 ft line and I was'nt feeling too good myself. Heck and I was driving Saturday. Does'nt happen much to me but being this the first trip of the year it made me very uncomfortable until the wind came up a little. Then I started to feel a little better with that blowing in my face. Never got close to loosing it but sure did not feel very good. Kind of helped once we found some fishies.

BTW I take Lipitor and Have never felt like it was a factor of how I felt. I'm 40 also so maybe it's just age getting to ya Andy.
