Default Good day to jetty fish for lings?

I know this is probably a question for our resident expert Depoe Bay Dan (Born to be Wild), but since I want to go in the morning and it's short notice I thought I would ask the collective ifish mind.

So Dan always recommends 6 foot swells or less and the less wind the better, but tomorrow they are forcasting 8 foot swells, 2 ft wind waves (at 11 seconds) and 10 kt winds.

Is this a deal breaker? I figured it might be as good as it gets in February? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Any recent reports on any of the North Coast Jetties? I'm mainly looking for Lingcod, Sea Trout, Perch, and Bass (not asking for much huh?)

Thanks for any info.

Wade

I would head to Barveiw, in Garibaldi. You can fish there off the jetty. I would use some sand shrimp, and about 2 oz. of lead. It wont hurt to fish it with these conditions, but it wont be as comfortable.

Throw white tailed grub jigs or Sand shrimp on a hook.

Good luck

You know... That sounds fun. I might do that on our jetty, today.
What rod would I take?

Spinning or casting?

An old friend taught me to rig up for flounder by the following means:

Mainline tied on the end with a snap swivel and appropriate weight.

On the mainline, then he would use those cheap plastic line connecters (about a foot and a half up or more), with a cheapo snelled hook, attached.

Wouldn't this be just fine-- and easy for me, since I can't see well to tie knots?

Jennie that sounds like it would work. Sounds similar to some of the rigs that Dan shows in his recent bottom fishing post:

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">8' swell is probably out of the question Bounty hunter.
Although the swell might be smaller than forecast.
It can get a whole lot better than that in February with virtually no swell at all.

I'm sure the ling fishing will be hot in March also and might hold up all the way through May or June as it did last year.

As far as rigging for the smaller saltwater species, I think using a pre-tied surf leader or crappie rig is easier but if I was to bait fish larger ling's and cabezon, I would tie my own surf leader using a crossline swivel (a type of three-way swivel) and tie your leader off of it.

Surf leaders and crappie rigs using snelled hooks in a size 4 or 2 is an easy way to fish redtail surfperch, striped seaperch, greenling (seatrout)and various other seaperch in the bays.

Thanks for the input everyone. I figured it might be a little rough, butI didn't know if it just meant standing higher up on the rocks.

My dad's been itching to try it before he heads down to NM for 4 months, so we might drive out on the off chance that the ocean is not so rough. To look at the ocean if nothing else.

Perch in the bays would be fine with us too. Is there a good place in Tillamook Bay to fish from the bank or is Depoe Bay a better bet?

Today should be good~ I saw on channel two news that seas were only to be at 1 ft. but swells a little higher. Just watch yourself!

Don't forget to bring lots of lead!

These ol' hats make it sound like trout fishing off the jetties. Just drop yer line in and grab a beer. &lt;chuckle&gt;

Plan to loose your weight at least once every three casts, if you are going to the bottom. Between the boulders, logs, crabs, and sea monsters, it's darn near impossible to reel back from the bottom.

On the jetties, fish the slack tides. In between, just sit back and pretend you're trout fishing.

Jennie,

The method that you mentioned has been very successful for me. I would use pieces of sand shrimp and fish very close to the rocks. Look for big pockets in the rocks and just drop your line in. If you have kelp near the rocks put your like between the kelp and the rocks. You should catch a wide variety of fish. Good luck.
