Default Re: Tillamook Bay Questions...?

Been awhile since I fished the bay......but although the 1st week of June was considered best you might try the Ghost hole...to your left (South) as you leave the marina...kwikfish (very slow)wrapped with sardine or herring tapping the bottom with your weight....or plug-cut...incoming tide to an hour after slack. Anything beyond crab harbor can get a little rough especially at tide change. Another possibility is in front of the oyster house at Memaloose north to the row of pilings. Good Luck

skahorse - first thing to do is check the regs. The bay has different openings than the Ocean. I think it is open now for Springers but closes and then reopens. It may or may not be open this year for Hatchery Silvers at all, sometimes is, sometimes isn't.

PS- Those were not swells (I'm sure) on the CR that were bothering you, those are wind waves and standing waves from the current. Ocean sswell is different. T-bay can get very choppy in the wind as well. Also- during a fast ebb current there can be standing waves from the mouth of crab harbor on out through the jaws.

Default Tillamook Bay Questions...?

Hi All!

I am thinking about making the trip to Tillamook bay for some Chinook/Coho action, and I have a few questions. I have never been fishing in the ocean, and I'm really looking for as much information as possible.

First, are there swells in the bay? I'll be heading out in my 16' aluminum boat, so i can't handle much swells, the CR was a little tough in spots the other night.

Second, where would I target fish in the bay? And at what depth? Should I head to the upper bay, more towards the mouths of some of the rivers, or should stick the lower bay, and in the main channel?

What about bait, I was thinking about trolling Kwikfish or prawn spinners. Maybe some herring too...? Again, what depths? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, are there any other boat related requirements other than your basic regs that apply to the rivers in oregon. i.e., do I need a radio?

Thanks in advance for the help! Sorry if this is too Beginner orientated. I tried using the search function, but wasn't able to come up with much. Thanks.
