Kicker motor shock!
Installed a Gerbeck motor (MOUNT)(just for you Mel) that worked like a champ! Thanks Gr8waves! One problem though. This weekend during a rain storm I reached down to shut off the engine. ZAPPO!!!! I get kicked from the kicker. Nothing like saltwater conducting electricity. How do I solve this little problem? It's mounted on this bracke to a 23' Bayliner Trophy. Motor is a Merc 9.9 2 stroke. Thanks in advance for answering a stupid question.

Re: Kicker motor shock!
Catch and Eat,
When you figure it out, let me know, I have a 15 hp Merc 2-stroke kicker and I have the same problem. It's just an occasional zap and nothing more than a weak shock. Although, my problem may have been solved by itself in that my kicker bracket broke on the way to the Ranch Saturday and I now have a new stainless one. If you saw two guys dragging a kicker motor into the boat on the Ranch, that was me -- quite an experience.

Re: Kicker motor shock!
Wear rubber gloves and shoes? Don't fish in the rain? Tell everyone your hair is naturally curly?
Hook it up to your downrigger cable and use it for fishing? Offer open seats with free electroshock therapy?
What the heck is a Gerbeck motor anyway?

Re: Kicker motor shock!
It's when you stick your pocket knife into the sparkplug wire Mel. Thus a Gerbeck Kicker motor. A subsidiary or Gerber knives Chicago 60609.

Re: Kicker motor shock!
Gerber Knives of Chicago?? ... And here I always thought that Gerber Knives
were produced locally and the company was locally owned. Guess things have
changed a bit since I worked there in the early '70s, huh??
-assAssin-
PS, how's *that* for taking a topic off track??

Don't you remember o'l Monty Hall on Lets Make a Deal. "Spegel Chicago 60609" says the announcer. Back to the shock problem.

Re: Kicker motor shock!
Call Dwayne Larson at Larsons Marina (under Sauvie Island Bridge)and ask him. If anybody knows he will.
I dunno why I suggest this- I gave you a whole bunch of ideas and options up above and you didn't seem to like them.
PS- Mine used to do this - I just quit using the one in the end of the tiller handle and used the switch on the side. It was a great way to wake up when it was slow though

Re: Kicker motor shock!
Your kill switch grounds out the spark plug wire. If you are in the circuit ie you being the ground I imagine it feels like being hit with a stun gun. Replace your switch and wire assembly with rubber boot or make sure there are no cracks in the rubber cover and or exposed wire to the switch. Either one will give a path for electricty. Always a good idea to ask an expert who works on your make of motor for a living for the best advise. Another good thing to do is make sure your trolling motor is grounded to your boats electrical system (neg. side). this will also help you catch more fish.

Re: Kicker motor shock!
Bernie, so if you cannot stop the trolling motor without a shock, why quit? Carry one of those rubber handled screw drivers and punch the kill button with it. Or better yet carry a rod, as in a Fishing Eddie and don't tell him before you ask him to kill it as you start the big motor up. Bet he would wake up and that would put you one up on him.
