Default Garibaldi Halibut

Fished Halibut hill Saturday with my Dad (due to a couple of last minute cancels) . Fished from 8:30 to 1:30. Only had one black cod to show our efforts up until about 1:00, and I hooked up with a 38"er. When my fish was about half way up, Dad hooked up with a 46". It was interesting reeling up and harpooning a halibut by myself (I'm glad it was small). There was quite a big drift, so I'm thinking that is why we only ended up with one keeper crab (we caught 26 two weeks ago with the same six pots). All in all a very fun day with Dad. HJ

Well we had to put some miles on but we finished the day with 3 hali's(53",49",34") and 1 chinook. Sunday we got out late and missed the good salmon bite but brought home 1 nice coho, 2 decent lings, couple of black rockfish, and 8-9 crabs.

I'll probably hang around the Garibaldi area for anymore salmon and save my southern trips for bullets.

Glad you found some fish out there HawgJaw!

I fished out of Garabaldi on Friday with Sturgeon Tom and Chad a friend from work. We ended up with 2 at 38", 1 at 42", 1 Sable Cod and 7 Dungies.

I also did battle with a 6'+ shark for 15 minutes. Don't know what type of shark, blue maybe? As we were trying to figure out if we should bring in on board and if not how we were going to release this beast, it came off, a blessing I'm sure. After witnessing it thrash his head back and forth with 48 onces of lead, like it was not there, I don't think I want that fish anywhere near my boat!

I guess I will have to ask Corrirod for some advise on shark What type of sharks are out there, are they good eating and most important how do you bring one on board?

I was not able to hail any other Salty Dogs all day Friday, I guess they were all out of Newport.

Good job to both of you! At least you got to spend some time with your dad Hawgjaw and I'm sure he's glad too.

No expert advice on the shark thing. We had a heck of a time trying to get the one I kept in the boat last year. We harpooned it, tailed it, gaffed it, bled it, and finally gave up and just severed the head off right outside the boat. Once that was done I gutted it outside the boat also by just cutting the entire gut, up to the lateral line, right out. Then immediately put him on ice.

Once I got home I put the filets in milk over night and then fried them in butter with some spices. Actually pretty good. Nothing spectacular but just good fish. I'll definately keep another one this summer I'm sure.
