My friend told me a few weeks ago that he was studying charts and had found some new places to try.

Well one new place anyway. I have to thatnk Dan Heckert, 'Wakm&Stakm' for his North rockpile spot which we named after him.

'Puffin' went there on Saturday and nailed a 117 pound halibut. He called us on the radio and we lit out from an aborted tuna run off Depoe that turned into a salmon troll. About an hour of hard driving at flank speed and we rolled in to the spot from Depoe Bay.

Jon then went to his new mystery chart spot not far away and hooked an even bigger fish. He claims it was as long as the back of his boat is wide. It would do you little good to dispute this claim with Jon because he believes and will try to convince you complete with arm waving and too loud explaining.

The fish hung around the back of the boat while they tried to get a harpoon into it and then took off snapping the leader. The bait was a salmon head on a 20/0 circle hook.

That's fantastic!!!! Way to go Puffin(John). I also lost a big fish up Garibaldi way. I know it was bigger than last years big fish(68#), just by the feel and the head shakes and runs it made. After about 45 minutes of gut wrenching reeling ,we got to the 50 foot rubber band. I was so tired of reeling ,I needed a break. I handed off to a friend to reel for a few minutes.We got the other 2 lines tangled and it came unbuttoned. Dangit!!! I did manage a Fat 40 incher later. sounds like a great time down in Newport. Sorry to have missed it. Are there any pics of the 117# er ? Tight lines , Tom

Guys It was nice to talk to you on the radio and share information. Thanks to Fishing Freek and Mint Brite for the fresh shad. Pilar sorry that I did not have a wire brush on board for you. I am gald that you got you starter fixed.

All in all we had an awesome weekend. We ended up bringing home 245# of Halibut filets. I weighed all of them once they were vaccum packed.
