Default Sunday Newport Report

What and awesome opener to Coho Season!! We limited in an hour and a half! I hooked one about a minute after lowering my diver the first time. We landed 9 total with 4 being keepers for the two of us. Talked to Corrirod briefly when we tried a little bottom fishing.

We took crab rings, for some reason, and got skunked. Bottom fishing was very slow with only 2 sea bass caught.

It was an awesome weekend and I can't wait to do it again!!!

Nice report and photos. I am interested, yet shy about taking my boat into the salt. Something about crossing bars that I don't like. I have not fished salt for about 15 years and don't know anything about Depot Bay or south of there as far as the bar crossings. I read that Coos Bay publishes the safest bar on the Or coast.

How far out did you have to go and how big of a boat do you go in?

Snapshot, Newport is a very safe bar and is easy to hit on the way back in. I have heard elsewhere that the silvers were hitting well both at the whistler and up by the lighthouse. 3 miles out and 3 miles back should do it.

Ray,

It's all about picking your days. Just know your limitations and don't go if you don't feel comfortable. How big is your boat? Roy takes his out in the salt every year out of tillamook. That should make you feel better And if you need crew, give me a call. I'll see if I can help. I've been fishing coho in the salt since I was a wee lad. That's one thing I feel comfortable with.
