Default North Columbia Bar (ocean)

Looking for someone who knows how to catch kings North of the columbia spit. Uncle use to take us north along the coast to mooch for the big ones. But that was the 70's. Any tips or locations and depths to start looking at. Really would like to mooch out a big one again. If there is a year to get it nail down early, this is it. (Help)

Thats kinda a secret, but what the heck...

Only on days with low wind / swell. Go around the end of the north jetty and mooch just outside the surf line between the jetty and the lighthouse.

15' to 30' depth. The bottom will have channels in the sand like where it gets like 5 feet deeper for 20 feet and then comes back up. The big kings like to lay in these channels. Big Herring is the bait of choice.

PLEASE only fish this on the calmest days. You are fishing just 50 to 100 feet outside the surf line and if something goes wrong you dont have a lot of time to figure it out and fix it. Two guys mooch and one drives the boat.

dewfish,

I'm curious. How much experience do you have with a boat in the ocean or crossing the bar? The north side of the Columbia river mouth is not the place you want to be. Especially Peacock spit. This area can be extremely hazardous as it is quite shallow and waves break from different directions far out into the ocean. Please check out the Boating in Oregon Coastal Waters guide for more information.

The only place I would avoid as much as Peacock Spit is Clatsop spit. Make sure your will is up to date end the life insurance policy is paid up.

PS- If my memory serves me right, 3 guys died there last year doing this. :depressed:
