Default Adventure at the Chicky Ranch

After much anticipation Vickie and I drove to Newport Friday to meet up with Taylor's Viewpoint and Keta for our first trip out to the Ranch for FB's on Saturday. Friday was Vickie's first day of her vacation and she was really looking forward to an adventure to start things off.

When we arrived in town, we headed straight for the marina to see how the days catch had been. As we were standing at the fish cleaning station, we saw this guy standing there boning a halibut. He and his crew were having WAY too much fun cleaning fish, laughing, joking and just generally having a good time. After a while I said to Vickie "Let's see if we can find Pilar". He was the only Salty Dog I who's face I would recognize, and I wanted to see how he did that day. Well, this guy cleaning fish says "Hey, are you going fishing with Jon?". I say "No, we're going out with a guy on ifish named Taylor's Viewpoint". "That's me" he says. As it turns out we were stand there watching Taylors Viewpoint, Skein, Dipseadiver, and 8knot cleaning their catch.!!

After getting checked into our motel room, went we went over to fish camp to meet some of the dogs. We met up again with TV, Skein and Dipseadiver. Later we met Keta, Hogemin, Coririd, WP, Bluebeast, Ragnar, and of course Pilar, who was heavily under the influence..........of Tuna that is. I know I missed somebody, it seemed like all the dogs were there! It was really cool to be able to put faces with all of the names here on ifish. What great bunch of people.

The next morning we met up with TV and Keta. The ocean was quite bit rougher than the day before, but TV and his boat handled it with ease. What a sweet machine. 1 1/2 hours later we were at ranch, ready to fish. Vickie handled the ride out quite well. In fact she was having a great time just blasting out into the ocean in TV’s boat. When we got there and stopped the boat however, she started feeling ill. Her trip really went south from that point. What a trooper though, she hardly uttered a peep. What a tough girl. We all felt really bad for her, poor thing. . She was obviously pretty miserable and all she could do is apologize for wrecking our trip. Of course, we all told her it wasn’t her fault.

The fishing wasn’t as good as the day before. The sea was pretty rough and the drift was too fast. I fought a 4 ft blue shark from about 400 ft and caught a HUGH 36+in. ling cod and TV got a really nice 53 in ‘but. I really got a kick out of watching TV and Keta wrestle that big ‘ol slimy ‘but down on the floor of TV’s boat. Vickie started feeling better on the way back, in fact she caught a little nap. By the time we got back to the dock, she was almost back to her old self, just REALLY tired.

Thanks a bunch to TV and Keta. They both worked really hard to get us into some halibut, but it wasn’t meant to be. Some days are like that. I had a great boat ride out farther out into the ocean than I had ever been before with some really great guys. I just wish my sweety could have enjoyed it more. However, we did walk away with some ling fillets, and halibut too, ‘cause TV was generous enough to share his catch.

Thanks again Taylor’s Viewpoint, I’d fish with you again anytime.

Woody, can you say "Scopamine" patch. Next time have Vickie get her doctor to prescribe some. I am bullet proof out there now with that little "friend" tucked behind my ear.....

We both were wearing the patch, the motion on the ocean was just too much for her. It's strange, the only two times shes been sick out of dozens of times on the ocean on charters, was when she was wearing the patch.

Just curious, did she put it on the night before? If I don't, sometimes I still get sick. Sounds like a great trip, sorry about the sea sickness. I sometimes have to take both pills and the Scope patch because I am addicted to catching fish on big blue and if it takes medicating to get there, then you do what you have to do.

I get sick no matter what I have taken, or am wearing. I feel for Vickie. I got sick on the trip out to the ranch Saturday. I was down for most of the trip. If I was laying flat on the seat, I was okay. I was worse this time than any other. Wife says its all in my head.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Yep, We both put our patches on before we went to bed the night before. I'm usually the one who has motion sickness problems. I get dizzy reading in a moving car. I guess her problems began when she started looking at those cool little jelly fish that were out there. She was focusing on the surface of the water instead of the horizon.

I use the patch all the time. I gave one to a friend of mine to try and he threw up on the drive down to Newport.

I fished with TV and Keta last FB season, great guys, great boat and having Keta along is like having a deckhand on board, very knowledgable and ready to do his part, and yours as well if you don't move fast enough.
I tried the patch when I went last time, and almost couldn't get out of bed.

GINGER is the key. Go to Winco and get some dried ginger. I'm not sure what it's called "crystalized" or something, it's in the bulk food area by the produce with the other dried fruits. Just a small bite did me for a half hour or so at a time. Top it off with some ginger ale.
