Question Converting my winch from cable to strap

Do any of you reading this have any experience installing a strap on your boat winch that came with a cable on it?

I have a Powerwinch 912 that came with a cable, but I would sure like to eventually put a strap on it.

The commercially available straps I have seen are not heavy enough for my needs, but I am sure some one does or at least can make me what I want.

Any ideas or sources come to mind?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

WD.

Cool Re: Converting my winch from cable to strap

Why don't you go to Harbor Freight and get this ...

Then cut one of the hooks off and wind it on ...
If the hooks too big for your bow eye use a threaded chain coupler to hook it to ...

I have a power winch also . I have had a lot of problems with cables over the years . I would like to convert to a strap but not sure how to attach it to the winch . The cables attach by sliding through hole about the same size as the cable. With my set up I need a electric winch even if the cables give me problems . I carry a extra cable if I need one .

I also have a 912 and have converted it from cable to a strap. I just bought the strongest rated 2 inch strap i could find for a crank, ie standard, type boat winch. since this was sometime ago, i don't remember exactly what i did to attach the web strap to the winch but i think i made a pin that fits onto the drive shaft. since the 912 winch is 3 inches wide and the web strap is 2 inches, i made two 1/2" rubber mat spacers to fit on each side of the web strap. i did this using a 4" hole saw drilling thru heavy duty rubber floor matting (this particular mat is very fiberous and is stamped as being manufactured in canada). drilled a 1/2" hole in the middel of each piece and then cut one side thru to the hole so i could slip the 4" spacer onto the main shaft and then installed the 2" strap. i been using this setup for quite sometime and everything seems to be working just fine.

i really don't want to pull the strap off but if you want i could send you a pic of what the winch looks like with the strap and spacers.

Infinity I like your creativity making the spacers . I need to unwind my cable to see what my cable drum looks like it has been a little while . A bolt might work to hold the cable on . Once there is several wraps that might keep it from slipping.

You would think i could remember how i attached the strap to the shaft but at the time it seemed obivous, i probably did just what you suggested, ie a few wraps then apply a lot of pressure with the wraps. if you don't find the 1/2" rubber mat let me know, i may still have some, some place.
