Salmon Inside Newport Bay
I am interested in doing some fishing for salmon inside Newport bay and was hoping someone could give me a heads up on the when and approximate where's.
Could anyone tell me when it is worth fishing? Do you use standard set ups? (divers/herring/anchovies etc.)
If someone knows this fishery I would trade an open seat for information. Boat size prevents me from hitting the big blue. I have caught a lot of salmon with friends and family but have yet to put one in my own boat.
Thanks in advance.

Never done it myself, but heard rumors that trolled plug cut herring in the area of the big natural gas storage facility in the fall catches fish. Also heard of people trolling spinners further up the bay. Probably similar techniques to fall chinook fishing on Tillamook bay, and there would be a ton of information on that on the main board using the search function.

Re: Salmon Inside Newport Bay
Wak'M, this brings up a question I have been a little reluctant to ask. I have a 19' North River and have not taken it to the ocean. I want to know it if would be of safe size to go out of a place like Newport or Depot Bay. I have fished buou 10 but do not like the Columbia bar so I stay home rather than fish in the ocean.
Do I need to go at first light or wait and come and go with the changing of tides? What is the best time or tide to in and out on?
How far out do I have to go and do I have to have a GPS or CB or Marine band radio? I do not have any of these but do carry a cell phone just about everywhere.
Maybe I will just add a post asking for this help and someone will offer to ride along to show me.

Re: Salmon Inside Newport Bay
Today it was rougher in the bay...to many boats running around.
The silvers are close and many limits by the whistler bouy. Divers and herring arer fine.
It took about 2 hrs to limit the boat...no chinooks

Re: Salmon Inside Newport Bay
Snap....you have more than enough boat for this fishery.
Today is much the same...and I couldn't go but got a call from a friend who was catching fish just north of the jetty.
As long at you don't hit the extreme low tides in the morning there is nothing to fear.
Tghe typical Newport weather is no wind in the morning and just a left over NW lump from the day before. Then about 11 you start to see some wind....if you are concerned just fish north and it will be a good ride home.
There are boats all over and many many....a lot smaller than yours.
I think this year is going to be one of those years with good fishing on the beach...since the warm water continues off shore..
Good Luck...and email or call and I can give you an update or run out at the same time...Cheers

Re: Salmon Inside Newport Bay
SnapShot- I am by far no expert on this but I will tell you this, I have a 19 foot inboard jet and I hit Newport yesterday chasing silvers. I crossed the bar about two hours into the ebb and it was fine. We ran north west until we reached 160 feet and started trolling. We caught our coho's and headed south for some bottom fish. It was great and the ride wasn't all that bad either.

WAK'M
When you say off the beach. What do you mean? I have heard of catching salmon in the surf from the beach and also just outside from a boat.

Re: Salmon Inside Newport Bay
I mean close to shore...yesterday 40% of the fish caught at the whistler were chinook...that is one mile out...

Re: Salmon Inside Newport Bay
Takclebuster ., I really appreciate the information as I have stayed inland for to long. From what you say, the whistler is about a mile out and I anticipate to the NW from the bar. I can handle the water but just didn't know about the bar. Is is about the same way at Depot Bay. Your in one minute and out the next?
How do I find a boat ramp in Newport? Seems to me it would be on the North side of the bridge and to the east. You could say that when it comes to the coast.
One last thing. I am going to buy a hand held marine radio for safety. DO they have all the channels everyone is talking about chatting on? Where do I find the Ifishers on the radio?
Thanks again

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Actually there is a ramp on the south side of the bridge, take the first right off of the bridge heading south.
Official Salty Dog's channel is 78. I beleive all handheld VHF get all the channels? But remember you will not have the range. A good handheld costs just as much as a quality fixed mount and antenna.
Make sure you have all of your safety equipment for the ocean, most overlooked and forgotten are flares. A GPS and Compass are almost a must anymore, just make sure you can find your way back if it gets foggy
