I got out on the Julie Rose III yesterday, and what a day it was. We started out fishing halibut at the ranch. It was slow, but I managed a 43" fish on a piece of salted blackcod. There were lots of blackcod around, and the halibut fishing was here and there. About 11:30, we had four fish for six people, and Bruce asked who wanted to go prospecting for tuna. It was unanimous.
We headed towards tunatown from the ranch, and started trolling after steaming for an hour. We were in 60-61 degree water, but there was little sign of life, except for a bunch of birds picking bycatch from a deep bottom trawler. Lots of orange fish in that bycatch. Very sad.
After about 2 hours of trolling we were all feeling like it wasn't going to happen, when Julie yelled "Fish ON!".
After that it was scratchy with another single, a double that dropped a fish, and a double we landed both. 3 fish on a black and green mini jet head, 2 on zuchinni broomtail. 5 fish over 5 hours of trolling from 12-18 pounds (guessing). We ran about 50 miles from Newport.
First time I have been aboard for the Halbicore conversion. Way cool. Even in the luxury of the 47' Julie Rose III, 14 hours is a long day. Bruce is an iron man, at the wheel the whole time. Thanks again Julie and Bruce for the great hospitality.
