Disposing of tired old car
I have an '94 ford Taurus that is used up, like 180k miles. Any ideas on how to get rid of it? It has served us well (and the police Dept before us), it does have the police package which is fun to drive. It just isn't worth fixing all its problems. It still drives so I can get it to the Portland area, its darkening my driveway in Scappoose now. It weighs maybe 3,300# so the scrap yard may be the best place for it, or maybe a salvage yard, the airbag must be worth a bit. I have more important projects so it needs to go now, and it really isn't worth fixing up, so I don't want to sell it to some one who needs a good car.
Any ideas?

Re: Disposing of tired old car
You hit the nail on the head when you suggested the scrap yard. You'd be suprised what you can get for metal these days. Or donate it to your favorite charity. And take the tax break.

Re: Disposing of tired old car
The former Miss Oregon and Miss America, Katie Harman did a commercial for a charity which took in old cars.
The name escapes me now..

Re: Disposing of tired old car
Donate it! there are plenty of places around that will take old cars and put the scrap money to good use. Do an internet search or look in the phone book, I'm sure you'll come up with somewhere.
I crashed an old chevy corsica beyond repair several years ago... I don't remember now the name of the place, but we donated it and they took it off our hands.
I think it's tax deductable too.
Just an idea.

Re: Disposing of tired old car
How about donating it to the local high school auto shop? I'm glad to hear (read) that the old girl made it to 180,000 miles.

Re: Disposing of tired old car
Regarding charitable deductions...
Under the new IRS rules applying to the value range of this vehicle, your charitable deduction will be limited to the amount it actually brings at auction (or, I guess, the scrap yard). No more claimed FMV. The charity has to report the amount they receive to you (which could be some months later).
Quite a few local charities have vehicle donation programs:
* I think the NW Steelheaders got one going.
* The Oregon Humane Society definitely does.
All those programs really prefer vehicles that are 'runner / drivers' and can be sold by auction (which your car sounds like)....when it comes to scrap, the $100 or so isn't worth the charity's time and tow company's involvement.

Re: Disposing of tired old car
If you take it to the scrap yard...
You have to remove the gas tank and drain all the fluids.
Why not just sell it for cheap on Craigs list?!

Re: Disposing of tired old car
Lots of charities will take it, or OPB I think has a donation program too.

Just call up your local junk yards. They buy cars.

Volunteers of America
National Heart Association
National Kidney Foundation
National Association for the Blind
Father John's
OPB
This is just a short list. I have donated running cars to each of these groups and they really appreciated a running driving car.

Re: Disposing of tired old car
Thanks guys, it really isn't a driver, just enough left to get it to get it to the yard, it does have a brand new starter my 16 YO put in it. I don't want to deal with the Craigslist crowd. Our local junk yard folded, I figured Catch and Eat would have an idea.
My sister was Miss Hillsboro back in the day, her eyes are blue.

Re: Disposing of tired old car
Plant some blackberries around it. In short order, it will go from
'lawn eye sore' to 'landscaping feature'
The folks at the coast use this method all the time.

Holy Smokes, a Taurus made it to 180K!!!! , sheesh, I'd dip that sucker in bronze and send it back to Ford as a landscape sculpture!
high school auto shop, or car donation (goodwill even does it) and take the tax write off...

Re: Disposing of tired old car
You may come out a bit farther ahead if you donate it and take the donation off on your taxes? I don't know if a school is a tax write off thing, but you'd be helping kids learn something that they may make a living at some day . Just a thought...
