Tuna off Nor Cal
This message was just sent to me from a buddy that is sailing to Hawaii.
....We're barely making two knots on a dead south bearing (latest position is: N 37 33.520, W 127 31.310). So, our weather fax has pressure systems, wind maps, etc, so we'll find wind. Plan is to continue south maybe as far as LA if we have to to get good wind. Caught a tuna about ten minutes after I put the first line in the water (caught on the cedar plug, probably somewhere off Port Orford or Cape Mendicino). It was small but we're having trouble eating all of it fast enough, two tuna dinners and tuna sandwhiches for meals.
They should be out there if we've got the water!!!

Is Tuna Insanity a valid defense for criminal actions? Anyone else feeling a little "postal" ??

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
Looks like based on their coordinates they are about 240+ miles due west of San Francisco.
I don't know why I keep thinking I need a bigger powerboat with more fuel capacity, what I really need is a sailboat with a big sail to get more range!

Now that would be a kick. Fly casting feathers off the jetty and catching tuna!

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
Well I think it'll be up to whomever goes out Thursday or Friday to find out because Saturday is looking pretty bad.
My money is on Pilar bringing in the first bullet on Friday! Of course he may have a little more competition this year!

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
Just got an email from a friend that tells me someone caught 14 off Pacific City on Thursday while traveling home from the Halibut beds. Can't give you any more info than that, 'cause that's all I got,,,,,,,,,

Slugranch,
The "Halibut beds" off Pacific City are at 30 fathoms so I have my doubts
about the validity of this report.
There was a post started yesterday (or maybe the night before last?) about
tuna off Pacific City that ended up being a hoax ...

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
Albacore actually were caught about a week ago off Shelter Cove (south of Eureka) - only 22 miles out. I know the one of the guys that got into them and no, this is not a hoax.

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
Nofish,
Oh, I have no doubt that there are tuna being caught in Northern Calif.
It's about the right time of year for it ... however I think we are still
a couple of weeks away from the first bunches of TUNA showing up off the Central
Oregon coast. I also think we are still about a month early for the bulk of the
fish to get here.
I could be wrong (like *that* has never happened before), but it's been my
experience over the past 12-14 years of TUNA fishing off the Central Oregon
coast ... Pacific City and Depoe Bay ... that it's still pretty early for any
sightings of TUNA in the 20-40 miles (offshore) range. (WOW! *that* was a
pretty good run-on sentence! )
Typically we have to wait until at least the 4th of July before we will
see the fish in the range of our small boat fleet. The *big* commercial
boats that fish out there 100+ miles may get into them sooner ... and
usually do.
Also, we may get to see POPEYE make one of those long runs early!!

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
Fish Assassin,
Thanks for the explanation on the Oregon tuna situation. While I have fished much of the southern Oregon and northern California coast for several years, I just recently got infected with tuna fever. The good news is those fish are out there and edging closer to the Oregon coast all of the time. I am sure you are correct however, it will be a few more weeks before the small boat fleet begins smacking them off Oregon. Hopefully sooner than later.

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
There *is* an unconfirmed report from Pilar that Marty (another Ifisher)
might have caught up to 6 tuna yesterday (Thursday) out of Depoe Bay. 'Course,
this is still unconfirmed and it would be the earliest in the year that
*I've* ever heard of TUNA being within striking distance of the "small boat
fleet". I really hope that the report it true! It would bode well for an
early and plentiful TUNA season this year! (IMHO)

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
Fish Assassin,
Keep us posted about that "rumor" - I am sure folks will be more careful about posting that kind of stuff. To be honest, I would have been one of the guys running to those numbers today had the report not turned out to be false.
It looks to me as if the albacore have a continuous link of warm current between the central/northern Oregon coast and where they are currently being confirmed as caught (off NoCal). There's no reason why they wouldn't be there if the temps and the temp breaks are there. The one thing that does seem to be missing off Depoe is the big temp break that we all look for. It definately is more pronounced to the south, especially where the last confirmed fish were taken off Shelter Cove.

Re: Tuna off Nor Cal
I'll be away from my computer after 1/pm today and won't be back until
Monday morning. I was kinda hoping that Marty would be on today to give
us the scoop. With any luck at all, maybe I'll see him at the docks tonight!
