I'm sure somebody will get the flame thrower out if I mention a non sponsor in the open forums. Will PM you with the installer that I've used to put XM in on 4 of my 5 different cars over the years (F250, Saturn Vue, VW Golf, Chevy Silverado & Cobalt).
I tried to do the first one myself. I just never liked the way I finally got the antenna wire routed into the cab of my pickup (F250). It totally bugged me as it was always getting caught in something I was trying to take in or out of the cab, like a fishing pole. So I took it in and paid to have it redone. Also, I tried using the mounting clips that go on the air vent, mainly because I wasn't sure how to fabricate a mounting bracket that would work in with the configuration of my dash and the aftermarket gauges that I'd already installed. The problem with the vent clips was that the darn thing kept falling off whenever I got off road. So, the installers spent an extra hour coming up with the mounting hardware and now it looks like it belongs.
However, having watched them do it, I tried again on my wife's hatchback. That ended up being easy to run the wire in around the hatch opening. Plus, it was real easy to mount the receiver on the dash. The hardest part was getting under the dash to get at the back of the radio to plug the FM modulator into the loop.
My conclusion is that if you're doing a small hatchback with easy access to the back side of the radio, you might be able to do it yourself. But, if you're picky about how things look, and want it to look as good as factory, its worth the extra money to let the pros do it.
As for subscriptions, I went with XM for the baseball coverage. But now that the merger has gone through, I've been getting emails about how they will soon be offering add-ons to my subscription package. I assume this means you can add things that are only available on Sirrius (like the NFL or Howard) to my XM plan. It looked like the music packages were pretty comparable, so for me it came down the sport I was most likely to want to listen to.
Hope this helps.
