Talking Hunters Ziploc Omelet, yummy

Ziploc Omelet
Found this useful had to share it.. works good. Chimp easy!

ZIPLOC OMELET.

(This works great !!. The best part is that no one has to wait for their special omelet). Can also use the Vaccum sealer Bag's for doing this.

Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more than 2) shake to combine them.

Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc. (substitute ham with some of your spicy canned venison)
Each hunter adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake. Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.

Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes Roughly. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water.
Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily.

Imagine having these ready the night before, and putting the bag in boiling water while you get ready for the morning hunt. And in 13 minutes, you got a nice omelet for a quick breakfast!

That's a great way to do it and you could have them pre mixed at home and just through them in the cooler tell you need them.

We make omelets in a baggie every year for christmas. The kids love it because they can do it all by them selves.

This might be a stupid question but do you use the standard zip lock bags, the heavier freezer bags or do they make bags that you can put in boiling water. If i try this, i just don't want to mess it up on my first try.

I just used the glad ziplock bags, the small ones.. But I double check to make sure they will work for hot water..

Vaccum sealer bags will work too

We do this with all sorts of meals. If your lazy like me and dont like doing the after meal dishes its great. We do spagehti sauce(sp), chili, the list goes on. It only sucks when you cut open the bag and realize that it isnt completely hot yet.

In alaska when we go back in for a week we make these prior and freeze them. they are good around 10 or 11 in the morning for some good motivation. we made these last year in our youth turkey hunting camp. the kids loved them and there was no mess.

one of the best reasons to do omlettes this way is the lack of oil or butter. This way is so much better for you (unless you add a bunch of bacon, like I do...)

Great post!

I used to make omelets this way for my patrol when I was in the boy scouts. I used the freezer style bags cause they’re a little tougher. Avoid letting the bag touch the bottom of the pot if you can.

Search "freezer bag cooking" and you'll find a great site for more recipes. Most you'll find here are boil water, pour it into the bag, and let stand. Some great stuff for you back country guys. The omelet recipe though, it definitely the easiest, and... almost idiot proof.

Thanks for the reminder Chug!

You can also do this for a breakfast burrito.... a little cheese, egg, salsa, whatever in the bag and then take one of those plastic paper plate holders and put your tortilla in it and set it on top of the boiling water to steam while your egg cooks.

Chug,..........

Some of us pre-cook breakfast burritos. Same deal just made up ahead of time and warmed on the tent stove or coleman.

Make up your favorite scrambled eggs/omelette and roll up in a warmed soft flour tortilla folding ends shut. Roll up in heavy duty thickness tin foil and freeze. Pack them in a gallon ziplock container and keep in the cooler. Take out and toss on stove as needed. Roll each time you sip on your coffee. (poke with a toothpic or sharped stick to check temp of center.)

My favorite is a southwestern style...Ham, cheese, onions, sweet peppers, salsa and jalapanos.

The first time i made these i was worried. I was wondering how in the world i was going to peel the plastic bag off the omlette. But, to my surprise, when the omlette got done, the ziplock filled with air, floated to the top of the pot and the omlette didn't stick to the plastic. It was the coolest (ok maybe not THE coolest, but close) thing I had ever seen. This is a great little tip. It has worked for me for years.

I tried this and me, Micah, and Robert loved it.

Just don't add the ingredients until you are ready to cook. The mushrooms turned my initial batch grey and it was too ugly to eat

Another thing that I did was take shredded cheddar and added that on top of the omellette after it was cooked.

I mixed the eggs and left in the zip loc over night. Cut mushrooms and put them in a seperate bag. Cut ham and put it in a seperate bag.

In the morning I added the mushrooms and ham to the eggs and boiled for 15 minutes, dumped the omellette into a paper bowl, topped with cheese, mixed it a bit and grubbed it down.

Thanks for the tip. We were ready to abandoned oatmeal and breakfast bars.

Not meaning to hijack, but you've obviously not tried Snake River Stampede.

Well, Some clocks run slow & Some Run's fast. That will give you roughly 13 minutes.
Or, If your of them Southern folks? Them's folks have hard time Reading a clock.

A True cook will never follow the instructions in making Food. One must adapt to the flavor & time frames for area & Elevations.

Glad this tip helped folks out in camping in the wild.
That will be the hunting camping tip for 2008.
