Default High Cascade Hunt

Well I pulled this once in a lifetime tag. I haven't really ever rifle hunted much but haven't been able to bowhunt for years due to 3 spinal surgeries.

A high school friend of mine also pulled this tag, I know what are the odds? Well he invited me up to his camp at Ollie lake. So that's where I went.

I hunted hard for two days, up before light and hiking in locked gates or roadless areas, during the mornings and evenings. We drove around looking for sign and good area's during the afternoons. Didn't see any fresh sign and not hide nor hair of a deer, elk, bear, cougar coyote, I did see a grouse though

I hadn't been to Ollie for at least ten years, what I noticed is what horrible shape the national forest is in. We need SOME{not like in the hayday}clear cutting and slash burning, we need some fires that we dont put out, we need some control over the bark beetles.

I need to cut this short I have more to say and it involves some of my short comings as a hunter not scouting pre-season ect ect.

But I did have a great time with a good old friend and that's what made the trip worth wild.

Natural forest fires are wonderful...but when you put them out the stuff that should have burned accumulates so that when it does catch you now have a fire that gets hot enough to kill everything including all of the trees. I never liked Smokey The Bear.

I hate Smokey too. He puts so much pressure on you by telling you that YOU are the ONLY one who can prevent forest fires. Why me? I'm not some Superman. I'm not even Batman.

Anyway, I agree that a lot of National Forest lands in WA aren't being managed properly for game animals. Seems like the people who make the rules could use windows in their stomachs so they can see. Deer populations in many of my favorite areas have plummeted because of food shortages.

Can't blame the fires on the USFS or firefighting teams...that is their job. And they must protect structures, towns, and people.

The real issue for me is the Clinton era crap that doesn't allow us to cut a burn after the fact....rediculous. It is an uneducated populous that pushed that bill years ago. So much waste, so little benefit in comparison to what go salvage plans would do. The two big fires in the Cascades could be so wonderful by now...some parts that burned HOT are looking great, but where 'fishboys' is talking about it's virtually a wasteland.

me too...I'll have to leave it at that....

go hug your neighbor and leave the timber to the professionals! I want that bumper sticker
