Default New Diamond Lake report

My wife and myself just got back from 6 nights camping at Thielsen view campground. The weather was very nice. Cool mornings and warm afternoons and the fishing? Well let's say 6 lb leader worked fine but was stretched thin to about 4 lb by the end of the week. My wife lost a (my guess) 24" to 28". We both saw the fish when it jumped. Then it proceeded to strip about 30 yards of line. After 10 minutes, throwing the anchor line, and being pulled 50 yards from the anchor buoy, we had the fish next to the boat when it decided to run a fourth time. With that last jerk the hook came out and the fish layed there for about 5 seconds them calmly swam back to the depths. The good news is that the 16" to 19' fish were abundant and very good eating. Yes there were a few of those recent planters but we found out that in the early morning the big boys ate first and the little ones came later in the day to clean up the baited lines of those who choose to sleep in. Late note: My wife reminded me that the big fish she lost took her bait around 6 PM. I guess a few big fish enjoy sleeping in too.

Getting to Diamond might be difficult due to 138 has been shut down for a wildfire up there unless you're coming from 97.

Thanks for reporting. Sounds like you had a great trip. Hoping to make a trip to either Diamond or Big Lava Lake in October to end the Season. Decisions...Decisions...

Yes there is water at Thielsen campground and there are very nice showers at the campground accross the lake. I believe it's called Diamond Lake campground. Donation of $ 1.00. We got to the campground Sunday afternoon and by mid week Thielsen was nearly full. By early Friday most new comers ended up accross the lake in the other campgrounds. Also hwy 138 is closed and last report I saw said it would remain closed (estimate)till Sept 29. I would check with road report before you leave. Final comment, it's nice to have Diamond lake back again. To any of you who fish with illegal bait you should take notice of all the problems you created. Personally if I see anyone using illegal bait I will take videos and chain your trailer to a post till the authorities get there. The fish are not that hard to catch. This is one of if not the best fishing resources in Oregon. Please let's keep that way.

I'm heading to Diamond with a group on the 9-26 for 3 days. Any new reports or advise? I've never fished it and need any help I can get.

suggest you search the posts with key words "Diamond Lake", get a cold drink, sit in a comfortable chair, and you'll be busy for a few days and come out of it with a couple of books full of the answer to your question

Good Luck and don't forget to take the time in between the catching to feel those special things that make Diamond Lake, in my opinion, the brightest diamond in the necklace of fishing lakes in Central Oregon
