Default Fuel Flow sensor

I purchased the lowrance LMF-400 with the fuel flow sensor, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to re-route the return fuel line on a fuel injected 351 or if not how much fuel gets returned to the tank. I would really like to make the system work as accurately as possible.

Is is possible to plumb the return line back into the main fuel feed after the senors instead of back into the tank? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would not be advisable to change the fuel return in any way. It will basically impossible to try and determine how much fuel is returned without another flow meter on the return line.

What you have won't work. I have been down this path trying to help a friend. You will need to research flow meters that plug right into the J1939 plug. this will read right from the ecm.
There are two brands out there. Let me know if you need help and I will dig up the info.

Fuel inj.systems on gas boats do not return fuel to the tank as a diesel system does. You would be able to read what is being pulled from the tank.If you can get a reading from the ecm problem solved. Is the lowrance a nmea2000?

Yes, the Lowrance is a nmea 2000, but I have not been able to find one that will specifically plug into the redline 351. Does anyone have one they like or know who I should talk to about in more detail?

Thanks,

I just went through this on my boat I went with floscan. They have what you need. It takes two sensors, you have to have one on the return line. Mine works great and is extremely accurate...jim

EFI does in fact return fuel to the tank.

PM HiTekRdNek

He has an injected 5.7L and the Lowrance fuel flow sensor hooked to a Lowrance LMS 337. Darn accurate, ususally after a day on the water the pump on the dock and the fuel burned on the 337 are within a gallon or two of each other after 60-80 gallons

did not mean to give out bad info, not familar with redline but, mercruiser fuel inj.does not return fuel to tank manual #90-864260001 pg.5b-8 runs thru a cooler and re-cycles to the 2nd inlet @the filter.Volvo rep says the same on their product.so on those it would work as it would read fuel from tank.I guess rite and wrong at the same time?I do agree reading the ecm is the way to go,why merc developed their smart craft system.Anyway good fishin to all.

So, the big questions is what systems can read the ECM and feed that information to a Lowrance or whatever? I have a Kodiak 6L and would sure like an accurate way to judge my fuel useage other than the multisensor Flowscan.

If your fuel system has a return to the tank. The Lowrance system won't be accurate.
The flow scan is the way to go.
I have a lowrance 337 with the fuel flow sensor and it is great, but I have an outboard.
