Harry's Bait and Tackle
Does anyone else out there go to Harry's Bait and Tackle in Newport? I go there all the time but I never see anyone mention it on the board?

Hi Tim,
Yep, while I haven't been there recently, I've been in there a lot in the past for gear.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
I have been in there quite a few times. They made up my first tuna handlines. Did it in a hurry and for a decent price. I like digging around in there. No telling what you'll find.

Love-em. They always got a bargain on something I never even knew I needed. They also have great prices on Plastics and Jig-heads, and Molds.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
I go to Harry's whenever I need something. Randy Druba owns the store and is an avid outdoorsman. I don't think he goes out in the big blue much, kinda gets that sea sickness thing real bad. It is a local business that needs our support. Just very nice to have a spot right on the bay front to get supplies.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
You're right, Randy doesn't hit the ocean much, if at all. He guides on the rivers a lot though.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
Randy is a great source of info for all the local waters, which he also guides on. His sister, Marilyn watches the shop when he is working on the water and is also always on top of what is going on. He keeps his store very well stocked and almost always has fresh bait on hand.
Both are very good people and can custom make tackle to your needs, many times on short notice or while you wait. They do reel and rod repairs, as well as rig and rent crab gear.
Remember to watch where you step while in the store, cause the dogs like to stretch out to sleep anywhere and everywhere on the floor. Both are very friendly and love kids.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
My favorite place to shop! I am always amazed at the variety and quantity of tackle and gear that can be found in such a small space! Sorta reminds me of some boats! Randy is wonderful and very free with a lifetime of knowledge. He is fun to "bargin" with and the dogs are delightful. I wish it was closer to me!

It is down at the bay front. Near the undersea guardens.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
Need to get my feet wet, first Post, Harry's has a ready supply of nets and have forgot mine from time to time think I have five or six hanging in the building. If Harry dosn't have it it probably won't work anyway.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
Harry's does remind me of some boats as well. The older the boat the better. I have tuna gear from the 60's. My tackle box does show an interesting history of fishing trips and fishing buddies. Our tools of the trade. Some old Heddon Tadpolys that are at least 20 years old, and on on...
Harry's bait and tackle was the place to shop twenty years ago just like it is today. Who knows what buried in there.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
I spoke with Randy over the 4th. Gave him a bad time about his stock of tuna gear and he imediatley went to the catolog to start ordering. He should have a good selection buy now.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
Newport is a big place when we are towing a boat. Most of the streets are user friendly but do not have much for parkling. Does Harry's have adequate parking for a pickup and boat trailer?
How do I get there from 101? The boat basin is on both sides of the bridge and it the streets are very tight on the North side of the bridge.
Please give us a couple land marks if you know them. Like where to turn off 101 and then what.
I want to get into some of the bottom fish and will stop in there for local info and tackle. I will always help support the little guy vs corporate stores and especially if they are as good ( and friendly ) as everyone stated. My sorta people.

Re: Harry's Bait and Tackle
Snap shot, Harry's is on the waterfront and is not a easy place to park a truck and trailor. On a week end it is almost impossible.
