Default Boat hauling

Ok, I'm getting irritated with the company in CA that said they could haul my boat up here, gave me a quote, but so far still have been unable to give me a time frame. I've called two times today to no avail, and they say, "I'll call ya right back, I'm checking". I got no call back, and now they're closed for the weekend.

Soooo, anyone here in the boat hauling business? I have a 30' Sport Craft power boat in the SF Bay area, 10' Beam, about 8000 lbs, 10' above the water line to the top.

Anyone?

Thanks

Agreed...just trying to find a reputable trucking company that can handle it, and do so in a reasonable time frame.

Naaaancy, where ya been? I see you posting on the BATC, but not here. Nice to hear from you again.

Have you tried Dudley Boat Transport?

web page

I hope they're not the ones you're waiting on?!?

So you got ANOTHER boat! Did you sell any of the others yet? How big is your fleet?

Good luck, Mark

Bottom Time - Thanks. I'll give them a call

Mark - I've called Dudley, and they wern't able to do it anytime very soon. I believe they were quite a bit more expensive as well. Am going to give them a call again on monday and talk to them and get more specifics though.

I still have the Sea Ray. The engine is corroded out, so am going to sell it as is for whatever I can get. Thinking about putting it on EBay or something. I managed to get rid of the Dory, so just have the sea ray and this one now.

Ya, I've actually given thought about bringing it up myself. I'm not sure I wanna run 650 miles up hill on a maiden voyage, and the fuel cost would be a fortune no doubt!!

My usual fishing partner and I have talked about making the trip. Figuring possibly upto 20 GPH fuel consumption, (probably not THAT high, but hard to tell with twin 350's), and MAYBE being able to run up at 15kts, we're looking at roughly 43hrs of running. That figures out to 860 gallons of gas, and at an easy $2.00/gal (if lucky at the docks)....that gets spendy. That's providing for NO break downs, lay overs for weather, etc. I have to admit though, it'd probably be a fun trip.

Your numbers a pretty close to my actual...I had moderate seas ( on average they were around the 10 ft combo). I ran at 3200 rpms. I did however stay close........5 to 6 miles off-shore.

Ya, and you were running down the hill as well, thus making your trip smoother than mine would be. That and I'm not sure I could legally do it, since I'd have to take 'possession' of the boat in CA to do it, which would mean I'd have to pay CA sales tax. Not something I relish doing.

Not sure what Cali does but in Wa........Oregon residents don't have to pay tax.

Right, I wouldn't have to pay tax on it as long as I didn't take possession in CA.

Nancy, if I'm not mistaken the tax hit occurs when you register it with the state DMV. So if someone bought a boat in Oregon, yea no tax at the dealer but they take it to CA and get hit with the tax when they register it. And the opposite, you buy in CA, sign the pink slip over (is it still pink?), but bring it up here to register & then no tax. Someone correct me if I'm mixed up on this...

Are you buying it from a private party or through a broker?

I don't know about boats....but I know someone who bought a car in Oregon destination Ca. The car had to be used and stay in Oregon for 6 months to avoid Ca tax.
Was nice meeting you Nancy....I'll watch your posts on getting your boat up here. Good Luck !

Nancy- Norgard Boat Hauling. I dock with the guy in the off season (Nov-May in MC near Scappoose) , he does wet or dry load, Hydraulic trailer, 50 foot, 50,000 lb capacity (max). 25 yrs experiance, state/fed license etc etc. Good guy, never used him (never had a boat dry hauled)but I do know him.
Give him a call. I'll e-mail you his phone number.

Nancy - A friend of mine just bought a 50'+ sailboat in San Francisco. he hired an agent to take possession for him at sea beyond the three mile limit. Evidently it is a legal way to avoid state taxes and normal operations on big boats that are not going to stay in California (he is hiring a Capt. to sail it up in August). I can get the details if you want.

Mark - It is through a boat dealer. Not sure at what point the sales tax hit occurs with boats. This is the way the dealer described it, that I'd have to take possession in Oregon to avoid the sales tax.

Mel - I'll give him a call monday. Problem would be if he had to run down empty, it could get much more spendy.

Crabbait - Thanks. Personally, I'd prefer to have it hauled up here...but if push comes to shove, I may have to do it.

Thanks all for the ideas and suggestions. I'm anxious to get it up here and get out on the water again...just frustrated at this point.

Is anyone familiar with BoatTrans Express? I got a reasonable quote, (actually about $300 less than previous lowest quote). I believe they're a broker, from the looks of their contract language.

But from talking with them via phone, they say the carriers all have cargo liability insurance, and authorization...they reportedly have a person down in the area (of my boat) now, who could travel this week.

Anyone familiar with these guys?
Thanks

Not familiar Nancy- I'd check with your insurance carrier. They probably have something to say about the transport company and may have info for ya. Even though the carrier is insured, I'd double it up and make sure your insurance co also covers you. If nothing else, your insurance will then go after the tranpsort co or the transport co's insurance so you won't have to (in case of an issue).

Hi'ya Marty. Been a long time since we've chatted.

I will be keeping the new boat in a slip. Have talked with'em already...not finalized it yet, but they say no problem for the new boat to park there. They'll make a room for it.

Not going to be chartering. Just for personal sport fishing....probably run upto 6 guests/crew on it. Not gonna go anymore than that though. Besides, I have to have lots of room for all those tuna that're gonna be bloodying the decks.

Oh? Well, send'em on over. We'll sort it out.
