Default calling in elk solo

i usually like to have a partner for setting up and calling for elk but i will be solo for the last 12 days of the season, i have called in bulls and cows solo but seems alittle tougher because the hang up and pin point the sounds, what kinda tricks of the trade have worked for you calling solo, i know alot of guys have killed alot of elk solo so it is effective also.

Make the cow calls sound far, spike bugle near and WEAK. Let him think he needs to go by you to get them cows away from that pipsqueak.

That's what I try...hopefully someone will enlighten us with a better way.

Decoy way behind you...in line with the bull...actually just off to the side.

Some will use a cloth decoy and set up in front of it. That way the elk can get that visual stimulation as well

That's exactly how I killed my bull this year!

Remember to allow for shooting lanes when he is coming in. I made the mistake many times before where I would set up behind a wall of brush(blocking my forward view) in hopes he would walk by a shooting lane to the side of me. I would always hear them just in front of me coming in and then they would hang up...................I wished I would have been able to see in front of me and maybe I would have at least got a look at him if not a shot? I have had luck setting up in front of a large old growth tree or a thick wall of brush right behind me. I have often tried to sound just like the bull that is bugling and it has worked. Good Luck.
