Just kind of curious on how you fished from the hatchery down to the highway, when half of that stretch is private property, with no fishing allowed?

I can't believe you guys are complaining about people on the Alsea. There will always be people on that river regardless of how HOT anybody says the fishing is. It is 30 min. from everywhere and that means people will be there every day. You guys can't tell me that you don't get a kick out of watching some of the people out there. Did anybody else see that guy with the 14 ft spey rod? I helped him climb 15 ft into a tree for a $2 fly.

it's a real zipperlip.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, I've gotten over a half a dozen personal messages going as far as to tell me that I've ruined fishing on the Alsea, and that I should be ashamed for reaveling the secret of the bobber and fly. What I'm saying is wake-up. The Alsea is never going to be the river you go to get away from people. It wasn't when I started fishing there (waiting to fish 5 years ago)and this post isn't going to start the great migration. And Ty, you're right I did just let 6000 people know about it, but I'm also guessing that you never saw the articles on the Alsea that have appeared on the outdoors section of ESPN.com each of the last 3 years, with a detailed map and techniques guide. Besides a few more Ifishers would be an added benefit to this great river, and might actually clean it up a little bit. If the people bother you fish somewhere else, I've met some great people that I would've never met if they were'nt fishing next to me.

funny how ifish is supposed to be a forum for fisherman to share info, the n.f.alsea is crowded and has always been that way, alot of people on here welcome new guys to the board, but it sounds like you would rather not meet any of them on YOUR river and would be content to just know them in cyber space, sharing honey holes is one thing, but if the bite is on people are going to find out,how many people do you suppose are not ifish members that share their sucess with friends and others at the local tackle shop, not everyone on this board is going to run to the alsea or any other river for that matter,i guess we can all stop posting our stories, then this board would be like all the rest on the internet. just my opinion.

Hey you ZIPPER-LIP FANATICS.

This is a fishing forum. If you aren't here to share - THEN DON'T!

QUIT RIDING SOME GUY JUST BECAUSE HE WANTS TO SPREAD THE WEALTH!

We have had this discussion a million times. If you don't want to fish a crowded river then go somewhere else. Most people aren't going to change their plans to go fish a 'hot river' anyway.

Selfish, real selfish.

Thats funny I fished the NF Alsea from 1-5:30 pm and didn't touch a fish. I only saw one fish caught and heard of no others. I didn't make it up to the hatchery though. Did I miss the bite again? Or........

RiverDogg - Thanks for the post. I wouldn't worry about somebody flaming you for the report. That river hasn't been a secret for a long time. Besides, somebody who flamed you said, in recent post of his, to seek out those spots away from other people and discover holding spots of your own. I appreciate it when fishermen SHARE what the fish were hitting, and that there are fish present. Pssst! don't tell anyone but I saw springer landed today just between Astoria and Scapoose. Oh no, the word is out.

ya know, I really look forward to posts like this. Some of us don't get 1/10th of the time we would like to go fishing. I am on call quite a bit,& have a family to spend time with, so I get to live vicariously through these reports. keep em comin. I mean, it's not like it's steelhead season or anything, and is there even a river on the coast they don't come into? oh no, I said coast. now there are 6001 people that know.

I think MuleyBuck asked the right question. How did you fish to the bridge? Or did you ignore all those No Trespassing signs, that I believe were paid for by ANWS?

If he fished from the hatchery to the private property, then fished at the bridge wouldn't that be considered fishing from the hatchery to the bridge  . And maybe he has permission to fish the private property

hey Riverdog I wasnt bashing you for saying any thing about the north fork I was laughing at the people worrying that it was going to get more crowded.

it can hardly get any more crowded then it already is there arent any parking spots left

I drove up there and had a look on the way home after fishing the main river about mid jan and I am sure there wasnt a rock left along the bank that didnt have someone standing on it I am just guessing but I figure there was probably 30 to 40 rigs parked between the hiway and the hatchery.

anyway glad to hear you did good up there

I thought Ifish was for sharing info on fishing as a whole like where the bite is, what they were biting on, river levels and conditions, and how crowded the river was not just posting pictures of every single fish someone catches as to make themselves feel like a special person. Get over the zipperlip controversy its a free country and if people want to share info than that is there god given right. My .02

Ty- Dude I love your reports but did you honestly think that we didn't know you were fishing the Alsea? It is a little obvious that you go to school at OSU and run to the river every chance you get. Is there a closer river to Corvallis that I don't know about that has been kicking out that many fish? Don't tell me you are doing as well as you have been bank fishing the Siletz or Yaquina.

Ty, dude, you're the last one down there needing to sweat competition! You'll just catch the ones everyone else leaves behind for you. Lately, that seems to be a LOT of fish! Keep it up. Folks just enjoy giving you a bit of smack, kind of like playing "King of the Hill" Nobody has been able to knock you off yet, don't sweat the little stuff.

I like reports like yours, I don't think it makes more people go there, and even if it does, they are hatchery fish, and made for the taking. Keep up the reports.

Hey Ty I heard they are catching them at mile post 14 just behind the big rock under the tree and just left of rock slide but right of the right of the sign that says fish here.Get over it! If you can't out fish the guy next to you than take up bowling and you can be sure to have a lane to yourself. And forget all of us just getting along because there are to many people on here who think they own the hole because they landed a fish there one day when no one was there.Try the north fork down the Soap stone cr rd,Try big cr hatchery, how about the guide shop,Dam hole on the Trak, mile post 20 on the Wilson,Salmonberry,Lewis & Clarke and God forbid anyone ever heard of the Clackamas or Sandy!SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.Don't tell anyone but fish are thick in all of these rivers.

Thanks for the Alsea report. Too bad that your report got flamed out to be a 'how many fish I caught' and 'SSHHHHH - its a zipper dude' topic... lol! This isnt about two people, not really sure what its anymore  . If anyone shares about anywhere they get flamed.

I dont really care - as I posted in a recent topic that was deleted.... I will post where I caught and when - on what, if I want to. Thats why I joined ifish.

I am familiar with the NF Alsea. My oldest son lives in the town of Alsea and fishes it extensively. I fished there in January for three days and was amazed at the amount of pressure this little "creek" gets.It reminds me alot of another small stream with a hatchery and a big run of steelhead concentrated in a small area. Anyone remember Big Creek? You guys don't want NF Alsea to turn into the same type of thing believe me.
Just my opinion guys but please respect the landowners down there.

Ty I have been fishing Ironheads for 20 years, somedays alone and days with 30 or more. Some of my best memories are days with alot of fisherman and not so many having success and being able to help them through my experience.I fish the NFNH in the canyon were I have had plenty of years of hooking 50 to 100 fish a year.I have no problem seeing people because the 10% still catch 90% and I have no problem sharing the river with anyone who respects the area I fish. You seem to have some kind of problem with the sharing of information o this board.I suggest you just fish and don't let the board bother you .I could give
my exact location and grab another slot, drift or just mix in.I'm not one to brag but I have gone full circle with my attitude now that I'm 42 and enjoy fishing more today than 10 years ago due to just knowing I'll catch fish no matter who is around me.I really enjoy meeting people and giving them all the knowledge I have so they to can become one of the 10%.If you catch an incredible steelie and no one is there to see it, did you really catch it? Who Knows?

I'mjust glad that those who choose to post locations and such don't catch many fish.
. Think about it it makes sense.

I think thats what we are all thinking Salmon Stryker. I think Ty was one of the only ones who thought it was a secret this whole time. I thought he was plunking on the willamette? Ty, alot of us knew were you were fishing at but other coastal rivers are closer for the majority of us.
Don't worry theres not going to be a ton of people going there because of this since the majority of the brats are not looking so hot and alot of the "meat fisherman" could care less about the nates since you can't keep them.
So don't sweat it man and go out and enjoy yourself like you were before this thread, besides you said you were fishing were most people weren't anyways. Remeber most fisherman are like sheep they go were all the others are.

Actually you guys have done a good job of voicing your perspectives without letting things get too hot. Nothing wrong with a little disagreement - but the mods sure appreciate it when you don't try to burn each other down.

Thanks.

Ty's concerns are valid. Even though as many of you said, the north fork of the Alsea is not a secret river. There are still alot of people from up north (PDX, even salem for that matter) that aren't familiar with it or wouldn't consider it without a "hot" report. My question is this, why would anyone ever want to add even more crowds to a place . I feel that this board is better used to share techniques and pictures rather than reports. Common sense that sharing real time reports with 10000 + people (members + lurkers) isn't real bright. Figure out of those that 1% are report chasers then you have an influx of 100 people into an area. I am not into handing out charity to non hardcore fishermen and frown upon it. I personally don't fish the NF Alsea very often but realize that the last thing that river needs is more people. (its not real big)
Its also a lack of respect for people who consistently fish a river, to put an influx of people who don't understand the individual customs of or unspoken rules of a place. Thats why reports get flamed so much is because there are people who put in their time on rivers and fish hard when the bite is not "hot" and then to have the patience ruined by having what they have waited for Blown by somone crowding up the whole place.

And people who think that they are cool because they post reports with locations just to spite the people who are against it have some growing up to do. (not all reports, just ones that have active topics on them )
P.S.
RiverDogg,
I don't think that you discovered the whole boober and fly thing, so how is the person that showed you going to react when he found out that you shared his special technique with 10K people. Sometimes these rigs are what allows a person to have an edge in crowded situations.

Great post river dog! i can understand why Ty is concerned..... i went yesterday around 3pm and the road to the hatchery was totally blocked with cars. But i remember last year, around this time of the year was pretty much the same... its a popular river but there is always place to fish.
when i saw the crowds i went down to clemens park and fished there for a few hours... i saw a guy with a fly pole hook one right next to me but i didn't even get a bite.... i was cold so i decided to go home and then i thought i'd check how everyone did at the hatchery. i drove in there and to my amazement there was none at my favorite hole... all of a sudden i wasn't cold and i had that wild look in my eyes  i tried a pink and white jig for a few min but i still don't know how to use that darn thing so i tied up a pink pearl corkie and yarn..... second cast and fish on
upstream >>>> downstream >>>> jump >>> jump >>>> jump >>>> >>> 7-8# hen squirting eggs on the bank... first steel on the alsea
thanks again for the post and if i can beat the crowds so can everyone else...
see ya on the bank...

I fish the Alsea weekly (everyday when I was in school) and still have buddies that fish it almost everyday. The day before this post my buddy calls and says, "Hey the pressure is really dying down on the NF, I think everyone is switching to the Siletz." Typically this seems to happen this time of year. He just got home from there and called to say the past two days he's seen more people fishing this little stream than any other day the whole year. Coincidence, I think not. I told him that someone posted that it was hot on IFISH and he was ticked. "That explains it, I knew it had to be somethin'" Ifish has 6000+ members and growing, I would never post that the fishing was hot on a STREAM that is so small you can almost jump across it. In my opinion, bad choice of judgement, especially if you like some room when your fishing.

I think it is always best to use a little discretion when posting to forums with a very broad/large audience.

I will say that I normally am by myself out there from mid Feb. on. However, this year (particularly this Fri.) it has been as crowded as I have ever seen it during any month. Some of this is obviously due to the fact that the broods have extended the season some. I would say that a larger factor is the increased visibility that this river has seen in the last few weeks (ifish included).

I don't think that anyone can argue that this river is a secret in any way. However, I don't think we need to add to the pressure of ANY river by being blatant about things. I think that was all Ty was trying to say.

Nope. The nf alsea is not a secret. the Register Guard ran a story last month on the front of the outdoor section, complete with pictures about how it "looks as though the fish grow on trees, because fisherman hang their catch on branches while they continue to fish." etc.
I looked up how many readers that paper has. 168,000!
Plus the online version of the paper. I believe it was Mike Stahlberg who really leaked our zipper lip spot

Can someone please email me a map to get to the Alsea from Philomath. Me and 17 of my friends and Co-workers want to try it for the first time after hearing how hot it is. Thank you

The problem that I see these days, compared to 15 years ago....People are not as curteous as they were then! Fifteen years ago people would come to a fishing spot and would figure it was too crowded and move on. Now days a person can get up early and get to their spot early and this is good BUT, by the time it's good and light all the people that slept in will be commin' down the bank. These people seem to think "As long as there's room between two fishermen there's room for me". There's just no consideration for peoples personal space anymore.

Very well said WRO.

I'd like to challenge the fisherman who catch a bazillion fish on the NFA step up there game a few notches and move on to the lower river or discover a new river all togeather. Of course this is just my .02 but how much fun can it be to go to the kiddie pool everytime out. After a while doesn't it start to remind you of when your dad took you to the Sportsman show and you tossed your line into the bath tub full of fish? Well it does me. On second thought, you guys stay up there and hammer it out and leave the lower river alone.
