Re: Fishing Line
BTW, GI Joe's has a 25% off (2 items) coupon in today's Oregonion. It normally costs me $40.00 to fill my Penn 330's (400 yds of #80 tuffline). HJ

Re: Fishing Line
Fishermans Marine (this has been discussed in the recent past) does a very good job of putting dacron backing on and then topshotting whatever yardage of tuff line or whatever spectra you want.
I've been using 80lb dacron and then 300 yds of 50lb tuff on top. They know how to wind it tight and hit my yardage pretty darn close every time. (on Daiawa 50H Sealines)

Re: Fishing Line
A 300yd spool of Tuff won't come close to filling a 113H or a 114. I am looking for a better price than $212 for a 2500yd spool of Tuff 80lb. I have two 113s and two Daiwa 50 to fill.

Re: Fishing Line
crabbait- don't waste the tuff all the way to the bottom. Back em up dude! I have never been to the backing with the TUNA. Worst case is deep water halibut, 300 yds is going to cover that.

Re: Fishing Line
IMHO Power Pro sticks!
Maybe I just got a bad piece or had an abrasion in the line that I didn't notice, but either way Tuff + is my line of choice.
I have 80# on my reels, but I honestly think you can get away with 65#.

Re: Fishing Line
AHA,
So I wasnt the only one that has had line put on wrong at GI Joes. I was at Albany about 2 months ago and got some Stren put on......I went to fish with it and it was all twisted, going crazy. Took it off the spool by hand and you could see little 'bumps' on the line from it not being spooled right.
Tuff is about 6-7 cents per yard in bulk, which makes it a little cheaper buying it that way than a spool...........I wonder if they would spool some in bulk on something other than a reel? That way you could put it on yourself instead of having to re-do it.

Fishing Line
I need to fill a Penn 113 and a114 with Tufline, Spectra or something similar. I have been stuck on mono ( and clothes - line thick dacron ) too long and it is time for me to update on my deep water rigs. Do most of you just buy bulk line and put it on yourself, or do you have a favorite place to get it put on that is competitive in price. Also, any strong preference on which brand? Thanks in advance.

Re: Fishing Line
Hi 8K, I've gotten bulk spools of Powerpro on e-bay for a pretty good deal. And the "Tuffline" brand from GI Joe's. Having used both for halibut, I prefer to Tuffline. The Powerpro seems to fray a little easier; it's still good stuff though.
BTW, keep the dacron as it's good backing for the spectra.
Also, if you have spectra spooled on by GI Joe's or anyone else, be very careful to ensure they do it properly. Or once you leave the store, go to a football field & re-pack it on very tightly (many previous posts on this issue). A guy at Joe's in Albany completely botched a reel fillup so I learned the hard way. This is why I prefer to fill them myself, with gloves, wet rag, & put it on real tight with just the right cross-hatch.
p.s. Joe's has the 300 yard spools to do it yourself.
