Cape Lookout Dive
Over the last year or so I have talked to a few ifishers about diving. Here is your chance. I am going with George Young to dive Cape Lookout on Sat. the 14th. George has had a few people cancel. This is as best as Oregon diving gets and Cape Lookout is a premier dive site. I am posting this because this is just an excellent opportunity to dive close.
Expect mass crab, rock scallops and even spear fishing. We meet at Garabaldi at 6am and jump onto 2 chartered 6-pack dive boats (I forget the names). Cost is 65 bucks for 2 tanks. George knows this area well and this is the time to hit the Cape. Good vis, game, structure. Post here and I will try to answer any questions.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
7 MM. Farmerjohn and shorty. Very doable. I'll see how I feel when I don the gear for the second dive. Fine I am sure.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
$65 for a two-tank dive trip is pretty cheap thrills. I'm guessing the guys running the boats are experienced with divers and all the safety issues.
My question is how often do they (you) go? This is too short notice for us, but would probably be interested in future trips. We dive Hood Canal and places like Edmonds Marine Park, but haven't done much off the Oregon coast.
Do you ever dive out of Port Orford?
Have a great trip, by the way, and be safe.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
I understand Kurt. George had some other cancellations so I offered up on ifish
You are right skein. It is cheap thrills but tanks aren't included. Lunch is though.
George Young of Youngs Scuba has been diving for years. He is the longest and most contiguous dive shop operating in the Portland area. This is a trip that he puts together every year and is a real treat from what I understand. He doesn't operate the boat. I forget the names of the charter boat but George really likes them so I feel good about that.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
Bugleman,
Yeah, I was sure the tanks weren't included, but still, to go out, have someone drop you off, and watch your bubbles through two dives amounts to a lot of time on the water. To do that for $65 seems down-right reasonable.
They only do the trip once a year? Hmmmmm.

BUGLEMAN
I was thinking of joining you on your venture but I gave youngs a call and it sounds like they are postponing the trip due to rough seas.
Please let me know if you hear anything new.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
Yeh I called last night and told George what the prediction was. I figured they would make the call later in the week. After all sea predition is interpolated from weather preditions and you know what they say about weathermen. Also these June storms pull apart and amount to nothing alot of the time.
The trip isn't officially canceled. The skipper of the Andria K says is doesn't look good. We are on standby due to weather.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
If you're looking for a "REAL DIVE" boat, that can take you to reefs all up and down the Oregon Coast, you should check out the "BLACK ROCKET". I personally have more diving experience on more spots on the Oregon Coast than anyone, hands down. Cape lookout is a great place for beginners, but it is the most dove out spot on the Oregon Coast.
As for George and his operation; just "be careful" on his trips, he's known throughout the diving community. Unfortunatly its for not returning with all his students.
I have only seen a few Ifisher who have seasoned experience on the Oregon Coast. Not many.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
Capt KUJO,
I realize you are just speaking plainly. But on IFISH we don't just bash people. We don't know if your insinuated claims are true or not. Safety is another issue.
I do know that since you work in the diving community it is in your best interest to downplay the competition. Have you met George or even dove with him. You may be the Oregon coast stud diver but your post seems like a cheap shot to me.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
Dove out....Oregon Coast...that's pretty funny. There isn't a spot along this coast that sees anything that could be defined as "diving pressure" even in the loosest of terms.
I think Kujo's comments are pretty interesting given the disclaimers about just RIDING in his rocketship. Something about "not for the faint of heart". Anyone who counts on a dive operator to provide a "safe" dive isn't really in tune with the whole sport. It's dangerous and quite solo (even with the buddy system) by nature, and alot can go wrong that the dive operator cannot help you with.
I agree with Kevin and Mark, and if I were Capt. Kujo, I would edit my posting. It makes you look bad.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
No bashing here....sorry you took it that way..nothing cheap meant Just facts! I've met George many times. Ask him yourself how many of his customers failed to return from a diving trip alive. It's documented happening more than once!
Dive with who you want....George is by no means considered "competition" to me. I'm just giving you in the diving community a "factual heads up"
As far as being dove out (Cape Lookout), other than the North Pinnicle out of Newport, Cape lookout geets much more diving pressure than you think.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
KUJO I give you credit for intent. Maybe not so much in other aspects. Thanks for the heads up. I don't know George as an instructor. I do know that I will have fun diving with him.

Kujo, take those conversations offline via email, private message, whatever, just keep it off the board.
Nuff said.

Re: Cape Lookout Dive
If you dogs question capt.kujo's validly of his posting then you may stand down now. George runs a cut rate operation and that is what you are going to receive if you are interested in doing business with him.
The judgment used in selecting students and or charter patrons is a serious situation.
There are charter captains that will not let him on their vessel due to a variety of reasons.
I suggest that if you are going to dive charter you do your homework, ask questions ... live longer.
