Default Dog...... Mans best friend!

Tomorrow morning at 9am i am putting down my old friend hes a black lab and is 17 and his hips are gone along with his hearing but he still tries his best to fallow me around everywhere i go! since he was a pup hes been at my side he watched me grow up just like i watched him. He retrieved my first bird and my brothers. He had more heart and love for me and my family than i have ever seen in a dog his only goal in life was to please us! its the hardest thing to decide when to say good bye to a Friend but tomorrow i will say it for the last time "come on old boy lets find us some birds!!!!!!!!" That will truly be the hardest thing to say without a tear rolling down my face. I just wish i could get him on one last hunt but theres no way. tomorrow he will be in Fields filled with roosters and rivers and ponds stuffed with ducks hopefully he has someone there whos a better shot than me

Jet you are the best dog i have ever hunted over and the best friend a guy could ever ask for thanks for all the great memories i am truly great full i will never forget you!!!

My heart goes out to you. Your love for your friend is obvious in the passion of your writing, and he's looking to you to do the right thing; and you are. Take strength in the knowledge that he'll be waiting for you when you join him on that next hunt, and even though it will be many years from now for you, it will seem like moments to him, and you'll have eternity to share together doing what you both enjoy so much.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sorry to hear Jet's time has come. It sure sounds like he's led a life of happiness. It is the hardest thing I've done also, you're not alone. I'll be feeling your pain today.

A dog is truely mans best friend, but there comes a time when when you must just have to grit your teeth and say goodbye for now. I know your pain as I had to put two of my best friends down within 30 days of each other. The first I had only 1 and a half years and he developed cancer but in that time I grew very close to him he was given to me by a former i-fisher, the second I had for 16 yrs since he was just a pup,he went and did everything I did,and only wanted to make me happy. I feel very saddened about your friend i'm sure he will be missed, it will take time but you will always have great memories of him.

Sorry to hear about your loss.... that has to be very tough. I get a lump in my throat everytime I look at my dogs and think someday we'll have to part ways.

I think it is safe to say that Jet lived a very good life. In 17 years that dog probably did more then most ever will, and he probably loved every single minute of it.

Man, this kind of thing is very tough to read. My thoughts go out to you and your best bud. My old lab is pushing 12 and he's really slowing down and I hate to think of his day coming. I know it will still be years, but he's going to get an extra big hug tonight and an extra treat as well.

Hang in there dd2. Like you said, Jet will be feeling great and chasing birds to his hearts content soon.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

There really are no words that can ease the pain of losing a friend like that. You can take some comfort in knowing that you provided a great life for him and that helping him along in the end was the right thing to do. In time the pain will ease up and you'll only remember all the good times you shared and he will make you smile again.

I also feel for you, We had to put 2 down within 2 months of each other. Both had been with us since they were puppies. One was 17 and the other 14. This is the hardest part about owning any dog. I knew in my mind that it was for the best but that didn't seem to ease the loss. I'm Sorry that you have go through this, remember the fun times and hang in there.

Very sorry for your loss. I let my girl go last year and still tear up thinking of her. Funny how they impact your life. Mine was the first dog I ever owned and trained. While she was in the vet's office, I told her to "mark" and gave the vet the nod, and released her with her name on the eternal retrieve. It's a gift we can only give our animal friends. Someone sent me this story and I found it very comforting. We are the leaders of their pack and they are always looking to us even on their last day. Take care.

A dog’s prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

I had a lab and went through that and I know how hard it is. I have two beagle boys now and they got extra kibble and hugs tonight. To my wife and I, they are our "other" sons. My thoughts are with you, remember the memories.

I am sorry to hear that it is time to say goodbye. I too had to put my best friend Jett down just a few months ago. Its not easy but it sounds like the right thing; Hold him tight and tell him the words you wrote above...He will understand.

I ran across this the other day, spoken from a 6 yr old who had to put his best friend down. It is one of the most comforting statements I have heard on why a dogs life is so much shorter than our own.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good
life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'
The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that,
so they don't have to stay as long.'

Prayers with you
Gunner

Sorry for the pain you're about to endure. Life can be difficult on our feeling and heart at times. I also had this difficulty placed on me a few times.

"You get too fond of a dog. Not until after his death do you realize how much he meant to you. I sometimes wonder if the pleasure in owning a good dog is worth the misery caused by his death!"

I put my dog down April 27 2007, and while the pain was intense and real at first, it slowly lessened. I still miss that little mutt and the memories are as clear and vivid as her pictures on my screen saver. I couldn't have imagined a more perfect dog for my family than she turned out to be. I feel for what you're going through DD2.
