Default Newport Report

Today was the second best day I have ever seen at Newport, well, since I have been boating. There was probably a 3 to 5 foot swell at times but other than that it was perfect. After shriveling up in the Valley the past few days, it was nice to go to the coast and cool off.

In exchange for the great water we had a hard time tracking down the fish. Went to Johnson Rock and Seal Rock. My Dad hooked 2 nice Black Bass and one undersize Ling. I managed to get ONE Black Bass. I tried my hole up by the lighthouse with no fish to be found.

We finally went in since I remember reading that the Herring were biting by the CG Station. We anchored there and fished for about 1/2 an hour before going in. They were there but pretty spotty.

All in all a good day, even though we didn't get too many fish. I did see a guy with a 10 1/2 pound Cabezon at the cleaning station. He said all the fish were just outside the bay and south a ways.

That was the calmest sea that I have ever been on. We went diving around seal rock on SAT. It was pitch black from 40' on down. With the vis that low I thought the fishing might be slow. After diving we ran to the rockpile at 25 to 30 mph. Big contrast compared to halibut season. There was lots of bait balls on the surface but I didn't see anything eating them. We were bottom fishing and I think I hooked into a chinook twice but I could get them to the boat before they came unhooked. We ended up with a 10# ling and some crab for the day. I was at the North end of the pile. That is a big trihull.

I fished a little Saturday south out of Newport until I had engine problems with my starboard engine and had to come back in. I did pretty well on the herring right before the tide turned in the evening. there was a guy in a 12' skiff tied up right at the bouy in front of the C.G. Station that jigged up a bucket and a half. Most of mine were big but I did get a few little ones I'll save for a rainy day.
