Re: Saturday Report from Marty @ Depoe
The weather was too nice to fish for salmon, so we headed out on a FLAT ocean Saturday AM in search of Mr. tuna. Water was really warm (for this time of year), but we found no temp breaks, no current or debri lines, no birds working and no blue water. We put the lines in around Pilars spot and trolled in 58.3 degree water and then started toward the 125/45 area, but the water was cooling down as we headed west. Headed north of the 45 line, to about 45 10.00, and found that the water was getting gradually warmer, to as high as 58.8. Still no good signs, but we put the spread back out and trolled around for another couple hours as we headed back in. Within 5 miles of the beach the temp was still 57. We got to about 345 feet straight off Depoe and put a bait down to 100' with a cut plug herring and Wham-o within 3 minutes, a 30 lb. chromer. I think the Gods were telling us that this was our reward for the 100 mile tuna search. The story on the dock was that a shrimper called in a dory friend who had some tuna gear on board and the shrimper got into a bunch of tuna 18 miles off Pacific City. Heard it from 3 different people, so it could be true. A commercial salmon fisherman told me the tuna fleet was 125 to 150 miles offshore right now and slowly working closer. Its just a matter of time.
Even though we burned a lot of gas and didn't even get close to catching any of the silver bullets..........it was way, way good to at least be offshore in flat conditions with the sun shining, two good buddy's, a few cold beers and the only boat in sight. I KNOW there are some fish out there and weather permitting I am ready to go again. Although next time I will bring the Ifish fleet with me so we can cover more area.
Good fishin
Marty
