What's your favorite Halibut treat?
I'm curious as to what everyone's choices of baits are for halibut. Fresh bait(squid, octopus, shad, herring, etc), jigs, plastics? What has worked best for you?

Yes.
To answer your question, they all work. I used squid, octopus, and herring on the last season and will be adding shad to the menu this upcoming season.

Fishplay told me about sardines and they seem to work better than anything else.

Re: What's your favorite Halibut treat?
I like to set up a large herring (purple or black lable size) on a mooching rig with 2 12/0 Circle hoohs, then attach the head of the squid to the lower hook as a trailer. This gives them some veriety to choose from.
Sardines also work very well since they are very oily.

Re: What's your favorite Halibut treat?
My go to bait is fresh caught Herring, salted and iced the night before.
No doubt about it. I tie on two at a time, the bigger the better. There is a little technique involved and Johnboy laughed at me and thought I was crazy but it works.
Use lots of stretchy string to reduce the number of 600' bait checks.

Re: What's your favorite Halibut treat?
Hi Ray, long time no Bend is your friend. How's the beer in the land of EIRE?
I have to agree with Mr F. about fresh herring. It's always worked pretty good but since Popeye gave up his secret to perfect bait it has worked even better.
The secret is the fresher the better and a box of rock salt. We catch 1/2 bucket full for each trip and carefully salt and ice the bait for the next day. Search fishing reports from May for the low down on how a bag of this bait turns the black and white polecat out of the boat and the bend becomes your friend.
Oh, and mooched, the bait catches Halibut, Lings and Kings at the rockpile ... what would you change?

Re: What's your favorite Halibut treat?
I was talking to a guy who commercial fishes Halibut with rod and reel. They use salmon heads almost exclusively. Says they don't get bothered by small halibut and other smaller non-targeted species. he had pictures from this years season of fish at least mid-hi-fifty inches. What do I know?

HOGGEMIN
I let the top hook slide with a half hich just above the top hook and just below the head of the herring.
Mr. Fisherman
I've found that when it comes to Halibut and herring, the bigger the better. So 2 herring together should do great.
