Default Ocean Conditons for Sat June 7th

Anyone have any guesses on what the ocean conditions will be like on SAT? I saw the perdictions of 4' wind waves but I was hoping that they wouldn't show up.

Sometimes you just have to be there. A lot of times the wind won't come up until later in the day.

About all you can do is be your own weatherman. Go to the thread on Weather Forecasting Links and check out the Stonewall and Columbia River buoy for current and past conditions. This will at least show you trends of conditions going from morning to night.

I'd bet that Saturday morning will be no wind and 4-5' swell. One of the best days in the near future. Unfortunately, I'll be golfing all weekend in Sunriver. Oh well, tough work, but someone's got to do it!

I got my golfing out of the way yesterday. But like Rod said sometimes ya just need to go and check it out. Saturday morning could be nice. I'm going to be there just in case for the initial saltwater shakeout run. I've already got the fresh water fish slime in the boat now it's time to get some salty slime it.

Fisherpeople,

it's looking real fishy tomorrow -- My allergies are killing me, my asthma is acting up -- about the only thing that will cure this is some marine air. Besides all of that -- LOOK AT THE LATEST FORECAST!!!!

Saturday might be good in the AM.

The last couple mornings have been great with the wind not blowing till afternoon.

Then again, it might not blow at all. I wouldn't bet on it though, they have been right on lately.

I'd say go for it CrazyFish! Like you said the forecast has changed and is looking better.

Just got back from the store and took this pic of one of the locals fishing off of north point Depoe Bay at 5:45pm.

It's so nice that even though I don't have the time, I'm going to grab a rod and see if I can catch a fish or two off the rocks real quick.

Bumped into Mark (Fish Assassin) a few minutes ago at the port docks and he can't believe how nice the ocean is right now.

Wished the boat gig would have been this weekend.

Ok are the wind waves what will influence the size of the waves @ the rocks?? Or is that the swell??
I ask because last time I went off the rocks @ Depoe the ocean was almost like glass but the waves on the rocks were still really rough

Russ,

It is the swell that is the predominant factor for fishing off the rocks. When swells hit the beach or rocks, they break. There are some exceptions if they are a small swell and it is a deep water area off the rocks,ie. the "ledge" at Boiler Bay, etc.

Wind waves can become a problem also when you are low to the water and the wind waves are big. A good example of that is when you and some of us ifisher's got together that time and we were right out in front of Depoe Bay. The wind waves were big (4') and we were at sea level.

Wind waves are usually a bigger problem with small boats on the salt because they are close together and you get that "rock & roll" or "Maytag" effect.

As a general rule of thumb; 6' swells or less for rockfishing and boating out of Depoe. Up to 8' swells for boating depending on the boat and direction of the swell. 11' swell seems to be the borderline point for some of the big water big charter boats.

3-4' wind waves usually indicates 20 kt winds or so and is usually miserable for boaters and rockfishermen.
