Default internal vs external

Howdy,

Looking at the Garmin 162 GPS. What at the pro/cons of internal vs external antennas?

If the unit is in a hardtop pilot house you'd probably want the external antenna. With the Garmin products, if it has an internal it can easily be converted by the user by removing the internal. Take a look at the Garmin 182 as it accepts blue chart nav chips, I dont think the 162 does.

Kenai,

The boat has a soft top, that is why I am leaning towards an internal. According to the Garmin site, the 162 is Blue Chart compatable.

How much performance (if any) would I be giving up with an internal?

My guess is you wouldnt be able to notice the difference. I use a handheld garmin 12XL with internal antenna and a fixed mount garmin 152 with external. They've both worked well under my canvas top and the satellite coverage seems comparable. The external antenna units usually cost a little more.

I had both on my boat and both worked equally well under a canvas top.

Birdnest.......I recently installed the 162. If you can use the internal.....obviously it will be easier to install ( I have the external). The 162 accepts blue charts in the form of a CD....you will have to download from your pc....one thing to watch is the memory 2.5 kb..depending on the number of charts you want to use....also check for rebates...couple months ago they had a $50 on the charts.......it seems to be a very good unit....didn't come with secret numbers though!
