Thought some of you might find this interesting. Anyone shot an animal with hoof rot? Did you eat it?

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
My inlaws live on columbia heights and there are quite a few elk up there. I have seen a heard of about 20, with 3 or 4 spikes, about 4 or 5 times now. They seem to be around whenever I have looked for them.

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
Maybe someone should tell these people that the elk were there first and that they moved into there territory and not the other way around

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
Actualy these elk do frequent my backyard quite often, this year I applied and got drawn for a Stella muzzleloader cow tag,as well as having a mulitiple season tag making me good for archery season too,so I will do my part in try'n to controll the numbers by one anyhow.Just last monday I had a good looking 5 point standing broadside at 25 yards right next to my bow target .
This herd though is not healthy,as mentioned many of them have a limp, I think most of the limping may be caused by injurys, but I have noticed a few cows with club looking feet. The overall health makes me sad as many of them are skinny to the point of seeing ribs. The heard that frequents my back yard ,35 head, has the one 5point as well as 7 or 8 spikes a few of these spikes obviously carryovers, which I believe may never fork, and a good number of new '08 calves. Many of my nieghbors complain about the elk,but none of them seem interested in doing anything to controll the population, myself I like having them around, but they do need to be managed.

I agree to a point there has been alot of building further up on the hill that may have driven some elk down, but in general these elk didn't used to be here,I was born and raised in the area, and we never had elk around these lower neighborhoods untill the last 10 years or less,it seems to be a new herd that is only getting bigger.

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
I've lived up columbia Heights for 16 years on Nevada Drive. These elk have been here at least that long. I counted thirty last week. There is always some spikes and Multiple three and four bangers. Four years ago there was a six point standing in my back yard the day after elk season ended. If you don't like it MOVE!

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
Rm-I don't know. They do have plenty to eat. If I could only find the one that ate my apples before I could get to them. I've seen one or two limping, but not half of them. They look really healthy to me. Sounds like politics are about to be entered into this. Great!

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
I wonder what the regulations are regarding hunting them. I know one place they frequent that has to be a couple hundred acres of woods with no houses. I never actually thought about hunting them until I saw an acticle in the daily news a few days ago...

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
The situation is kind of sad. Some of the locals complain of the elk, but in the end they wont let you hunt them to thin them out.
WDFW used to give out about 25 muzzle, 25 rifle, late and early season cow tags 4 years ago for the Stella unit. Then it went to 50, then 75, and now 100 tags each method. But if you look through the sucess rates for those years you'll see that atleast back 2 years ago (I havent looked at the latest) only about 13 or less cows a year were reported taken. Because the private land owners wont let you hunt thier land. All the elk are taken off the logging company land up behind the private land. Up until last year the logging company kept all the lower gates closed and you could only drive the upper roads. Last year they had the gates open.
But if you only shoot the elk in the upper logging land you realy dont pressure the herds that have learned to stay low on the private land.
I'de be interested to see if the lady with the trashed orchard and corn field would let a hunter sit on her property, and if her neighbors would let a hunter, hunt or track an animal across thier property.
Every year all those tags (200+) get drawn. Private land owners just need to let the hunters fill them with the bothersome elk instead of the elk up on the logging company lands.
Instead of the "NO HUNTING" and "NO TRESPASSING" signs. How about a "I'LL LET YOU HUNT, JUST ASK FIRST" sign.

Chesapeake, That's exactly right!
Not in just this area but alot of areas with suburban elk problems. Same problem in Rose Valley where I live.

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
They suffer from hoof rot.Its pretty prevalent all around this area.
There is an ordinance in Longview that prohibits hunting of any kind in city limits.

No need to hunt within city limits. Its the next several miles of urban sprawl outside the city limits that need the hunting.

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
These are residential elk. They reside in city limits almost year round. It wouldnt do any good to hunt around the area. But not in it.

Re: Elk invading Longview!!!
I think his point was that just outside the city limits are suburbs, houses and the elk in question, just like in the city limits.
