Default Just a reminder...

Not trying to start a fight or anything but this is straight from the huntin' regs...I didnt want to post this on anyones post of an animal they killed, Im sure they are all legal, but see below.

The owner of a game mammal tag that
kills a game mammal for which a tag
is issued, shall immediately remove
in its entirety only the month and day
of kill and attach the tag in plain sight
securely to the game mammal. The tag
shall be kept attached to such carcass
or remain with any parts thereof so long
as the same are preserved.

And what's your point? You posted this because you saw a pic of a animal and you couldn't see the tag?? really tell me you're joking... maybe the placed said tag on the animals leg... it doesnt' have to be on the antlers to be visible. I think the OPS would give a guy some slack if he had a punched tag but he wanted to take a few pics of his animal without it being visible

Being this is my first year Im trying to read all I can and learn as much as possible so i am within the regulations and can have a legal and fun hunt this year.

My question is that I am going to tag the animal on the leg after kill and then take to a cooler where I will skin and remove the head. The butcher wants the tag with the animal but the head and hooves removed. is it going to be legal to transport once the head is removed if no sex organs remain?

I have tried to read and talk to as many people as I can but the synopsis for hunting is as confusing as the fishing one. The good news is that the in season changes seem to be far less then we deal with on the ocean.

Thanks for the reminder, I know you mean well. And I suspect everyone here who hunts understands this very basic requirement, but you never know.

Have a good season!

You know what IMHO I dont think some one whos doing some thing illegal is going to post of a pic of it on here.

When I make a kill I dont just run up and slap the tag on.... I calm down because I am very excited take a few pics and then I bust out my tag. I seen many OSP and they have never said any thing... honestly they are pretty nice as long as you are followin the rules.

as far as you making a post about it well more power to you but I am sure if some one wasnt clear bout the rule they would ask.

I'm always concerned about theft of my animal so this is what I do. After I get the animal hung, skinned, the head cut off, and I'm ready to go back to the truck for my pack frame, I validate my tag and attach it to the antler and take the head with me. To me the head is the ID that proves the animal is mine. When I get to the truck the head gets locked inside while I'm gone retrieving the meat. I have no intention of being illegal, just careful.

It's funny, i just talked to a trooper about this yesterday as i had some confusion myself. I had meat that i cut up myself, I had a cape that i took to the taxidermist, i had meat that i took to get processed into sausage/pep., and i have the rack that remained with me at my home..... I asked the trooper where my tag would go with everything spread all around, and he said it stays with the carcass/meat processor. If you were to ever have troubles, they could call the processor to confirm validation.

True that.......Just had to deal with that with my muley. The taxidermist wasn't too worried about a tag because he knew it was with the meat at the locker. He said if a warden or anyone stops by they can look up your information electronically if they need to confirm a tag for a head.

I just did the same.

the meat processor has the tag and the taxidermist has the head.

This is what bothered me with your post..."I didnt want to post this on anyones post of an animal they killed, Im sure they are all legal, but see below"

if you would have just posted just the info and not the swipe at some guy posting a pic of his animal.. like anyone on ifish would do anything illegal but i guess someone has to be the internet police...

The info you posted from the regs was spot on and thank you for the info.

I didnt take a swipe at anyone, thats why a did my own post and not on someone elses. Just trying to save someone from getting a ticket.

You need to go huntin for stress relief I guess.

the times i have taken my animals in the cooler owner requested the same thing from me but made a photo copy of the validated tag and gave me the copy and kept the original with the meat. i was checked by OSP and didn't have to worry about anything because the copy of the tag was attached to the antlers and the original was with the meat. i had a witness (the owner of the cooler) as to my cutting the head off of the carcass, so i didn't have the "proof of sex" problem anymore.

Not a bad reminder. I was volunteering at a deer check in station a few years back. A guy brought in a nice 4pt. He was very proud - it was his first deer ever. But, no tag on the animal.

I had to politely remind him of the rules and remind him that the state trooper stops by the check station very often.

He had no idea and learned something new that day.

I dont know about waiting to tag the animal even for just a little bit. I know what I am going to say is a little bit different circumstances but I think you will catch the drift of what I am saying. I was warned by the OSP raft out of Winchester Bay this year for not promptly tagging a salmon. We netted the fish, I took my hooks out, rebaited my line and put my line back in the water. Not much time elapsed. Johnny Law pulled up in the raft and warned me "If you got time to bait your hooks, you got time to tag your fish. Dont let it happen again." He was pretty stern when I got the lecture.
