Default 270 or 30-06?

Ive been thinking about maybe getting my wife a 270 and not an 06 cuz it kicks a little less. Do you think it had enough bullet options for her to use for both deer and elk? Im worried the 06 will kick too much for her...

A 270 will kill every thing in the North west you can hunt. Cheap ammo and shoots flat. Jack Connor a famous outdoor writter has killed a ton of animals with his 270. That caliber is fine.

Here is a place with recoil info there are others out there as well.

Haven't shot an elk with my .270 (I missed), but it worked on my moose. If you can only have one a .270 Winny and Nosler Partitions will kill anything in the lower 48 (not sure I'd take on a griz with one by choice) The .30-06 works on everything in North America, but in my experiance, the '06 kicks more. And since I can have more than one, I have a .270 for deer/antelope or when I'm walking a long way, a .30-06 somewhere in NM with my Dad or my brother (need to get that back), and a .35 Whelen for elk or when I'm hunting on horseback (composite stocks hold up to horse antics better than wood!).

A .270 will work just fine, but I prefer the .280. There are a LOT of bullet selections for the 7mm's, especially if you reload. If you're worried about recoil, the 7mm-08 might even be a better choice.

(Full disclosure, I own a 270)

I vote for the 270 because once you buy a 30-06 you really have no excuse to go buy another gun. Please, help gun manufacturers stay in business. Go with the 270!

270 2 elk and many deer with mine , It will in my opinion out shoot an 06 in 8 out of 10 situations and of course less recoil. She will like it much more than an 06 right now gauranteed.

I have a lot of rifles to choose from...Most times I choose my 270...Just about perfect for those cross canyon shots for spring bear...

I have the rem in 7400, semi auto, composite, light, no kick, cheap bullets, and your wife well just love it, so well you.
and it knocks down deer, and a poison for elk.

Go with the .270. You won't regret it.

Another vote for the 7mm-08! Never had one but they are about the same as a 7x57 and I've had three of them, great round!

Both. 130 gr 270 for open country deer, 180 gr 30 caliber for elk. The 30-06 is a bit more versatile because It can push 150 gr, 165 gr and 180 gr bullets. The 270 runs 130, 140, and 150. Since I hunt open country for deer, I like the 270. I hunt in the woods for elk, so I'm glad I have a 30-06.
