Default Crane P question?

I have never fished Crane Prairie and was wondering if it would be worth trying with a float tube in early October. I also have a 16 ft boat but I really love fishing from my float tube.

In the past, October was my favorite time of year to fish Crane. Cultus channel was loaded with big brookies and rainbows .
I haven't fished Crane for a few years in the fall. Just watch out for all the duck hunters.

Yeah, watch out for the bird hunters, but you won't have much competition from fishermen. Like Jimmy said, the Cultus Channel would be a good bet, but that would be a long way to travel in a float tube from the nearest access that I know of. I would recommend taking the boat anyway with the potential for adverse weather and wind on a big lake like that. Great fishing potential, though.

There is actually a road from century drive (hwy 46) that goes to cultus creek. It would be a easy way into the Cultus channel and be protected from the weather. I would also recommend taking the boat just so you could cover more water. Crane is a lot tougher fishing then it was in the past.

Thank You very much for the info I really appreciate it. I will take the boat and probably try to fly fish out of it.

It's been several years but if I remember correctly (fuzzy sometimes these days ) that spur off #46 crosses the upper Cultus River, which forms the channel, and winds up at Cow Meadow on the Deschutes arm. Beautiful crystal clear water up there.

We took pontoon boats, that are quite a bit faster than tubes, and spend a solid 45 minutes rowing each way (in the blazing son no less). We didn't land a fish, either. It is a tough fishery unless you are willing to put in some major time. Like others have said, I would not use the tube unless that was my only option, and if it was my only option I might fish at a more tube friendly place- Lava, Hosmer or Wickiup.

I have fished for bass and trout at craine for the last 5 years and fishing stinks, if you land a rainbow it will probably be 6-7 pounds though. sorry but cp does not get my vote for anything.
