New person to the board
Last year I started fishing out of Newport and shortly after I was invited to check out I Fish. I have enjoyed the stories and the tips. My first halibut trip I landed one that measured fifty eight inches -Wow ! I was hooked. My first trip out started by the Loran system which failed and I had to navigate by compass. Amazingly I found my way back to the outer buoy. The next trip I had a GPS unit on board.
I am hoping to meet some of you in Newport. We have the Lady Irish moored at B-88. We see some of the other boats but have not braved introductions. The boat purchase was actually my wife's idea, which means I am a fortunate man indeed.

Re: New person to the board
Hey Wet Fly......I'm new also......both to the board and Newport. Been busy fiddling with the boat so haven't wandered the docks. If you get over on E dock...stop and say hello.

Re: New person to the board
Welcome Wet Fly, you've found the right web site. This is a great bunch of people.
Ok, since no one else caught it.......where's the obligatory story Wet Fly? Its a requirement (kinda) before you become a pledged member of this society of salt encrusted misfits (or Salty Dogs as we like to call ourselves).
Paul B.
P.S. It doesn't really have to be true, after all we are all fishers.

Re: New person to the board
Wet Fly, look for the bulldog flags or Ifish hats or shirts. You will see the crew out in force during the halibut derby days in Newport. Walk up and say hi. We are friendly and will welcome you as a newcomer.
Popeye's boat, the Julie Rose III is the (unofficial at least until Popeye claims it) flagship of the fleet.
We also gather in Depoe Bay for TUNA! hunts. Some of us, anyway. There are others who run for TUNA! from Newport (Popeye) and Astoria (Missbehavin) and down south (Tailchaser, Bar cat).
All summer long, instigating a TUNA! hunt is as easy as posting your intentions on the salty dogs board and inviting others to join you. It was amazing last summer watching the dogs hook up and plan trips on the board, often on less than one days notice as the planets aligned, the SST charts turned blood red 30 miles out, the ocean layed down and the frantic daily fishing reports spurred people to call in sick from work and run for TUNA! town.
Welcome and watch out for the TUNA! crowd, we're nuts and it is contagious.

Re: New person to the board
Welcome aboard, Wet Fly, and tell us more about the Lady Irish. My wife is Irish too, so there's most likely going to be a celtic word in our boat name - when we get it.
Tell us about your boat. Wha' kind a wessel do she be?

Re: New person to the board
Return reply regarding The Lady Irish. She was built in 1975 and is twenty five feet five inches long and nine feet nine inches wide, with hard top. Powered by a 307 to shaft drive with a cruising RPM at 2,200, and holds 59 gallons of gas. It is difficult to dock with no control in reverse. She has sleeping quarters for four and with the addition of a full canvas top can sleep two more. This year I built a full width aluminum swim deck with trolling motor mount. The electronics are Lowrance 15MT, Magellan meridian marine, CB, Marine radio, and manual down riggers.
My first halibut season was in June of 2002. Accompanied by the previous owner and his nephew. We Fished at the rock pile where they each landed 48" hali's. I decided to put on some shad for bait and it wasn't long when I hooked one. Twenty minutes later I see what looks like a half sheet of plywood. Craig loaded the harpoon while I left the hali below the surface. Craig, now in position cued me to surface the fish, and he planted the harpoon through the gill plate, oh my ! the fun really began. I grabbed him by the jacket before he was pulled overboard, then the fish started to dance showering Craig with buckets of water. By the time the fish was finished he was completely soaked and I was laughing hysterically. The fish measured Fifty Eight inches. and according to the chart weighed ninety seven pounds. When we carried it to the cleaning station it was very heavy even for two of us. There was a lot of fine eating meat, and in June the wife and I hope to bend the rods on two more.
