Default Sat. June 15th Depoe Bay Boat Rockfish Trip

On Saturday morning June 14th at 6:00am (weather permitting) there will be some ifisher’s getting together in their private boats for a bottom fishing trip out of Depoe Bay. All are welcome to join in on the fun, ifisher’s and non-ifisher’s alike (is there such a thing now days).

We will meet at the public boat ramp at 6:00am. For any late comers (whether by design or otherwise) we will be exchanging some cell #’s and the appropriate radio stations (CB & VHF) we will be using. If someone is late and unfamiliar with entering and exiting Depoe bay harbor, we can zip in and have you follow us back out.

The purpose of this trip is to have fun, catch some fish, show unfamiliar small boaters how to navigate in and out of Depoe Bay, avoid a few obstacles (Flat rock, North reef, and Gilligan’s Island), and to show inexperienced rockfish fishermen how and where to catch these fun & delicious fish. I and/or a US Coast Guardsman will give a safety spill before we leave the docks.

Sunday the following day, I will be showing some folks their way around the rocks. If any boaters are coming down to fish both days, you will have learned enough fishing Saturday that I believe you will be comfortable going out without me on Sunday and there might be some experienced locals and others fishing on Sunday also.

6’-7’ boat rods work fine but I usually use my 8’6” salmon/steelhead rods. Any questions on tackle or otherwise you can post on this thread, or email me @ simonp@actionnet.net or contact me at (541) 765-2896.

I will be putting a current list together of folks interested in attending later but you can show up unannounced also if you would like.

As some of you may already know this thread ran on the other main forum and here. You may also know that it dissappeared. The point in posting it again is to do what we as salty dogs do. We help each other and we fish.

So this is a saltwater fishing forum not a political discussion board, not a place to pursue dissagreements. If you need to do that please use email and leave the rest of us out of it. Leave the why it went away alone too. If you want Drama, then skip work for an afternoon of Bon-bons and soap opera on TV.

I would very much like to attend this event but may miss it due to work and other priorities. So I can't say I'll be there.

I would also like to ask you to direct questions about the event to DepoeBayDan who is generously hosting and organizing this event. Any questions about tackle or rod and reel required or whatever ask him.

Remember to thank him too for taking the time to teach you about something he obviously loves to do.

Thanks, Dan. And I am thanking you all in advance for keeping us tuned to the fishing channel .... all fishing, all the time.

UglyGreen,

I believe you had asked about tackle. There are many different ways to fish for these tasty critters.

Some of the charter boats carry what they call heavy tackle and light tackle. The heavy consist of a heavy boat rod and normally a non-level wind casting reel. Usually a Penn. For the light tackle they use light spin rods & reels. (I prefer using my level wind to the spin gear).

Normally the spin rods have 20 lb test and they use 1-2oz. jig heads with 4" chovy/cocahoe minnows on them. (4" shads are not as durable) Ocasionally they will use 6" CT worms but not often anymore. A couple boats use a 1oz. jig head with a smaller hook (shorter shank) and a 4" grub or CT worm. There are a couple boats in Depoe and Garibaldi that use a 2oz. dart type jig (lead fish) and at times when the current isn't screaming, they outfish plastics big time as someone mentioned on a different thread.

For the heavy tackle, they use a 4-6oz. torpedo sinker with a 2/0 double hook while fishing inshore and usually add one to two shrimp flys above it. You will catch all the varietys of rockfish on the lead and on the shrimp flys including lingcod. Usually the lings are caught on the lead.

There is other tackle to use like for example the twin tail shrimp (scampi), 6" shads or cocahoes, diamond jigs, etc.

I normally fish a 6" shad or cocahoe if I am specifically targeting lings. You will rarely catch a bass on those so if you want them also, you need to put a fly or two above the large jig.

There's an old timer down here that we all consider the king of lings. Howard is his name. Fishes with the charters on almost a dailey basis. Catches more ling than anyone. He might be responsible for all 6 or 7 ling that come in on a trip. Happens a lot. His secret? 10oz. torpedo sinker with 5/0 double hook. He does plant a lot of lead on the bottom of the ocean though. And he is good at what he does.

I have often seen torpedo sinkers outfish live fish while on the charters. Sometimes someone will fish a seatrout (greenling) or small rockfish which is legal and the lead seems to usually outfish the live fish.

I prefer using my salmon/steelhead rods for the lighter jig fishing with 15-20 lb. test. If you are serious about getting after the lings, you might consider 25-30 lb test or tuffline/powerpro.

For fishing the heavier tackle (torpedo sinkers) a 6-7' MH boat rod works better and 30 lb test is the ticket.

Big game line is the strongest line I have seen or personally tested myself and has a good feel to it. Doesn't have the memory that maxima has and is quite a bit stronger in the test we have done. Works great for me for both salmon and rockfish.

As I said, there are many different things that work for these rockfish and I may have over looked some or am not familliar with some but I do work with charters and private boat fishermen up and down the coast.

Maybe I will get into colors of grubs, twintails and plastic fish later on down the road.

One thing to keep in mind is the 6" cocahoe minnow for lings in the pearl/ black back. It is hot! I have had numerous folks tell me that and order them over the years from southern California to Seattle. I have also heard that from some commercial fishermen that dingle bar or troll the reefs for lings.

Very glad to see you back on the board and still willing to give up good info freely. Count me in for Saturday, I usually partner up with Love2fish and I know that he is going to attend Sat. I dont know if I have a rider with me yet, I may have a spot open. Thanks for not leaving us newer salt babies.

I'm posting with reservation due to the fact I have not a clue what happened here.

Sounds like fun but it's the same day as the Rhoades pond fin clipping event.

Sorry I can't make it! :depressed:

Welcome Back DBD! I'm going to try like the dickens to get there on the 14th. The wife didn't give me the message that you called (I was out fixing fence) until I was in bed. Am up with a bad case of fire gut. I'll call you tomorrow.

I'm pretty new at running a boat in the ocean but my bro tive on a little teeny island on the equator for avout 10 years and has spent a ton of time in small boats. Hmmmm he drives the boat I fish? Yea that's it! well I'm going to give sleep another try. BAD ONIONS, BAD!

Dan,

I'm glad you decided to stay with Ifish. Your generosity cannot be measured. I have learned alot from your posts and I am looking forward to fishing with you on the 14th. I'd like to offer at least one more seat for the 14th and maybe another if the weather is nice and I can put the top down on the boat.
I noticed that Martin85 might be offering a seat. I know him fairly well, and if anyone gets to ride with him, I'm sure they will have fun (bring ear plugs if you have them  ).

Huh? Guess I must have missed some Ifish fun again? :depressed: Darnit, I havent been in an good arguement in a month or two!

Anyone want to hear my thoughts on gillnets? Or maybe someone wants to argue the finer points of what is or is not a commercial licence according to state statute and administrative rule!

Anyway, the point of my orignal question to Depoe Bay Dan was more along the lines of a suggested shopping list for participation on Saturday. Say I have 40 bucks to spend on hooks - flies - sinkers - swivels - lures - etc... What should I be bringing along for the Saturday trip?

South Paw,

Did you mean this weekend or the weekend of the 14th/15th?

I just received a large tackle order today for Longview and will be headed up that way via Hebo, Tillamook and Garibaldi on Thursday or Friday and usually like to stay a couple days in Longview when I go that far. I might be able to be back Saturday or Sunday if this is the weekend you will be here and are looking for someone to show you around. I'll bring along some home canned tuna sandwiches with lot's of onion.

I know an experienced local fisherman/mariner that might be willing to fish with you if I can't. Email me and let me know.

When I deliver to Old Mill Marina on the way up I will ask Terry the details on launching there during low tides for those of you interested in launching your boats there for coho or chinook this summer/fall and report back to you.

Terry is a good guy and managed Old Mill a couple years before Gary & Darlene took over. He's running things there this year.

I plan on fishing with you in your boat love2fish on Sat the 14th if that is all right. Hope this wind decides to blow itself out by then!

UG,

I think jig heads and plastics would be more along the line for June and especially since the majority of the water I plan on fishing will be relatively shallow.

If we end up fishing GP, there is some deeper water spots there (90-100') and torpedo's & fly’s might work well also.

I think I will shoot a pic of the various types of tackle and colors and post it in a few days after I get my business taken care of.

Sure wished Keta or Diamondback would grab GutshotApe and bring him up here for the trip.

Dan,
I was counting on you fishing in my boat. I have enough room to fish 2 in comfort, and up to 4 if we take the top down.

Hi Dan,

I hope meet you on Sat 14th at 6:00 at the boat ramp. I'll be there with my Father-in-law and/or a fishing buddy or two.

Need to repair my wiper (the arm broke). Want to upgrade by adding a passenger wiper and go to pantograph blades.

Your tackle pics would be helpful.

On May 26 & 27 I took some friends out of Garibaldi for crab, bottom fishing, & salmon. No fish were biting either day at Cape Falcon or the Three Arched Rocks. Tried Herring, Chrome jigs, leadhead with 6" white tail, shrimp flies with chunked herring. Nothing!!! We did get 8 crab on Monday and 13 on Tuesday.

It will be good to learn about piloting out/in of Depoe Bay. Also where to bottom fish, and what to avoid.

Cheerio'
Skipper

Ps. This is similar to my post on the deleted thread.

Yea South Paw, the wind might be howling. But it was real nice this morning and the wind didn't come up till around noonish.

Fishing is still holding up real well. One charter came in with limits at 9:00am this morning. Light load (only 4 customers), but heard he had his rockfish and 6 lings.

This has been the best ling year that I have probably seen in 8 or 9 years. You can probably credit that to the cut backs in the commercials, namely the draggers. Think we are seeing the results in that already.

I have heard in the old days (not so long ago) that a single dragger could come in with 30,000 lbs. of ling in a single trip!

Won't be around this weekend. Heading to Longview on Friday and will stay a few days and maybe try and pick up some more bulk lead on Monday morning on the way home.

Heard some rumors about long fin today off Blanco. Further out than the ifisher's want to go though.

I can hear Pilar now; well maybe if I tow a barge full of fuel...

live to fish,

You could have taken that 15' tri hull out tonight believe it or not. The ocean was pretty flat and no wind. I went to dinner at the horn tonight just before closing (9:00pm) and decided to go across the street and throw some jigs afterwards it was so nice.

A small boat went out in the ocean about 9:15 when I was on the rocks. Then about 9:30 a stiff breeze came up out of nowhere. Weird, it was out of the southwest.

I'll check with the local Coast guard and get there opinion of taking a 15' tri hull out of Depoe and see what they say. If it's flat that Saturday, I don't see a problem.

Portable CB's are available and relatively inexpensive. Portable VHF radio's are available also but a bit more money.

As I've stated before, I have several video's of kids out front in row boats and a local that takes a small skiff out. But you have to pick your days.

Yep. Not looking too good so far.

A post of mine from the rock/surf fishing thread on the main forum:

Quote:
The forecast has improved a bit for Saturday, but not enough yet at this point. Borderline for off the rocks Sunday. Have an email from a boater that cancelled Saturday because of the forecast. What’s up with these 10-12' swells in June anyway? Very unusual for June. Sometimes they do miss it though (forecast). See what it says tomorrow and Thursday.

Fri
SW wind 20 kt. Wind waves 5 ft. W swell 12 ft. Showers.
Fri Evening
SW wind 10 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. W swell 12 ft. Chance of showers.
Sat
SW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. W swell 10 ft.
Sun
W wind 15 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 8 ft.

I was looking forwand to fishing on the 14th, but the forcast isn't looking any better. I think I'm going to spend the day at the sprint boat races in Woodland with my son instead. Hopefully I will get another chance to fish out of Depoe Bay this summer.

Yea love2fish, the forecast has been bouncing back and forth between 10' & 12'. Was hoping this one would miss us and we could still go but it doesn't look like it. Might as well make the cancelation official and maybe we can get together and do it some other time.

One cancelation email I recieved suggested he might be able to make it Saturday the 21rst. That is the opener for coho and also a halibut day but I suppose if you're not involved in the halibut fishery and you want to come down for some bottom fishing and possibly some coho/chinook fishing thrown in, we could do it then.

12' swells in mid June. That ain't suppose to happen folks.

Well, I'm out of here on my way to Longview. Believe it was skipper that said he might be able to make the 21rst along with a couple passengers.

What time would we want to plan on it? The boat ramp will be backed up well before daylight due to the opening of coho season. "Hurry up and wait", or plan a later start after the ramp settles down a bit?

Default Re: Sat. June 15th Depoe Bay Boat Rockfish Trip

Yah, Dan, that was me.

We can meet whenever. We'll be driving from Oregon City on Sat 21st.

Looking forward to learning Depoe Bay, and the available fishing out of there.
