Lodge at Suttle Lake
Anyone ever stay there? Reviews? What size are the cabins, and how many do they sleep? Thanks!

Re: Lodge at Suttle Lake
Don't know but that lodge is big and nice! I walked in there last june, asking about a permit in my stinky old fishing clothes and felt a little out of place!

Well, if it's nice, perhaps I should stay someplace else. With my grubby old self with a ton of messy kids... Or perhaps I can dress in tweed and become a snobby hatch matcher...

That's unfortunate. I was looking for a place to take the family away for a weekend sometime after the baby is born. I found some travel reviews, and it appears they cater to an upscale clientele. There was one which complained about the quality of the "stemware" in which the wine was served. We're definitely not "upscale".
I'll keep looking.

Well there are a couple places near the Metolius that might be worth a look and, depending on when the baby is coming, you can often get some good deals on rentals at Black Butte in the fall (after school starts). There is even a pond at Black Butte you could do a little CnR flyfishing if you had a minute to get out.

While their website appears to be oriented towards adult activities, there are many photo's there that include children in them. I would recommend that you give them a call to answer any questions. They can be found on the web by doing a google search for "thelodgeatsuttlelake".

Re: Lodge at Suttle Lake
Happybrew...Wife and I stopped at Suttle Lake Lodge last year, I got the impression it was more for a romance getaway, then a fishing lodge. Depending on your wallet size, I would have to vote for Black Butte Ranch. Things for mother and kids to do, plus fishing. You can still go to Suttle Lake to put the boat in, if you wanted.
If you don't want to put the boat in and out, but would rather moorage it, I would suggest Shelter Cove at Odell Lake or Cresent Lake Lodge at Cresent Lake.
By the way, if I remember right, Suttle Lake Lodge was rather spendy. A phone call to them would clear up your questions. Just my

Re: Lodge at Suttle Lake
I stayed there 2 nights in May with my wife.
Restaurant: Been there before and was very impressed, This time I was not. The food was cold, and the fruit on my breakfast plate was old enough that it was not appetizing. So I am skeptical of the restaraunt, but would try it again. (very expensive)
Lodge: Very comfortable, quite, and peaceful. Although I think they allow children, I personally would probably find another place. I enjoyed my stay, especially for my wifes sake. I felt a bit out of place, and prefer the feel/privacy of cabins over the lodge feel. Everyone else that was staying there looked like they were dressed up for an occasion. All-in-all, it was a very nice place, kind of expensive, but probably worth it. (nice staff as well)
If I was looking to go somewhere with my wife and a new baby, I would check out cabins on the metolius or maybe shelter cove at odell lake. What are you looking to do? relax? fish? hike? boat?

Re: Lodge at Suttle Lake
In addition to the lodge, there are also small cabins that are a lot more reasonable. Very rustic, but comfortable.

Re: Lodge at Suttle Lake
I really dislike it when people run down a business. Someone has obviously invested a ton of Money and passion to make that an incrediable piece of real estate in a setting we obviously are all very fond of. The lodge is very nice. Also, there are 3 or 4 very nice "cabins" (really nice vaulted cealings, one bedroom and sleeping loft....good for a family or 2 couples. Also, there are cheeper rustic cabins and some fixed up older cabins too...The lodge is not for kids but Kids work fine in the cabins...We normaly stay there earlier in the year when the camping weather isn't quite as predictable. Have 7 and 9 year old boys. And other than at check in or check out, we just don't deal with the employees or the lodge at all...the cabin has a full kitchen and a gas BBQ so why use the resturant? We stay in one of the newer discribed cabins and it is @ $350 a night......I do however, understand what some of the pervious post may be eluding too...I have alway thought it was odd that I could stay at a place and spend $1100 for a 3 night stay and get no special treatment at all...they just leave you alone and when you do deal with them it's very brief and to the point...there seems to be no butt kissing training for their employees...but I will go back...again and again...because of the lake, the setting, the buildings.....But if the owner were to ask me how to improve his business, I would gladly tell him to do some serious friendly customer service training....I think that's what people expect from a place that looks so nice.

Re: Lodge at Suttle Lake
I can appreciate that not everyone caters to my particular demographic group. I suppose couples who don't fish and want to have a "romantic" getaway may want a nice lake to stay at. I've been looking at possible rentals at Black Butte. Any suggestions? Need room for ten.

That is unfortunate. I imagine it is probably a challenge to staff a lodge and restaurant in such a remote location. I noted that they are open all year to get the ski crowd as well as the summer crowd. If you have a staff that isn't quite taking to the customer service training, it can be difficult to just cut their hours or terminate them if you don't have someone else do the work. It can be difficult to find good staff even in a large city. What type of people are they hiring? If I were trying to staff a lodge and restaurant in that kind of location, I'd be advertising in college newspapers to get young, smart people who needed money and were trainable, and do that year round, making sure to advertise winter employment to attract young people who want to spend a term skiing and making money to get back into school when ski season ends. Not that I have any firsthand knowledge of the place. Running a business entails a lot of details, and if one gets lost in the details, one can lose sight of the bigger picture.

I didn't see anyone trying to "run down" the business. I just saw some good advice?
I am not sure if you were refering to me, but if so, I appologize. It is nothing I didn't already tell them directly. I think it is a nice place, but I wouldn't reccomend a young family to stay at the lodge. I only said it as advice for his comfort so he could enjoy his family vacation. If a couple looking for a quiet getaway would have asked, I would have told them it is a great fit.
And if a place had terrible service, I wouldn't mince words in saying so. (the same goes for great service)

Re: Lodge at Suttle Lake
I took his "run down the business" statement as referring to the lodge owner not taking as good of care of his guests as he possibly could, which I might add is the truth.
I have came off the lake while fishing several times and quite honestly was not given the most basic respect we as fellow human beings should get. The soups were excellant however I was left with the feeling that they really did not care whether I came back or not.
I will admit that I was somewhat under dressed when compared to others that were eating.
But hey this is America.
The owner has the right to conduct his business in any manner he chooses. As far as the pricing of lodging, he also has the right to set his prices at any level he chooses. And lastly he also has the right to be personally any kind of an individual he wants to be.
I choose to excerise my right not to let situations like this take up valuable space in my life.

I would recommend you look at some of the options in the camp sherman area. We honeymooned there 34 years ago and we are still together so it must be a good area.
I have not checked lately, but a few years ago there was something for every price range. Also a great place to ride bikes, watch deer and timber tigers, watch fish from the bridge, and everything else kids and grownup kids like to do.
