Newport Halibut
I am going to be in Newport the weekend of the next opening. I was wondering about how deep you are fishing at the chicken ranch. I have Daiwa 50h's with 250 yards of 80# tuff line on them and wanted to know how much more line I should put on. Do you ever get snagged out there? I have fished on a charter out of Garibaldi so I have an idea how to do it but just had those two questions. Does anybody mind sharing coordianates and milage? You can e-mail me if you want. The ocean will have to be calm for us to go but I thought we should be ready in case it is. If not we were just planning to catch some salmon anyways. Jesse

Re: Newport Halibut
I've fished the ranch on Charters out of depoe bay. I thinks its 600 feet on the plateau and then the sides drop off.

Re: Newport Halibut
BW, I think you're going to want some more line on there. With the drag of your line in the water as you drift you're going to let out alot more than 600ft. During the last seasons I was able to use 2lbs of weight but I had to keep the boat in reverse the entire time. My smallest reel has 350yds of line and there were a couple of drifts where I had a very uncomfortable amount of line left on the spool.
Feel free to use the Search function above and use the key words "Chicken Ranch" and you'll find all kinds of discussion topics to help you out.

Re: Newport Halibut
From the book of fish, chapter of Halibut
Chicken Ranch
N44 28.403' W124 43.603'
Watch the other boats and you will figure out the drift. 600 feet deep means you need a thousand feet of line.
Please be careful ... having a waypoint for a fishing spot 32 miles offshore does not make you a bluewater fisher.
I could reiterate for the 10 th time but I am asking you to read and heed the many words on this forum about having a sea worthy boat, an experienced skipper and so on and so forth.
I'll just say this .. you don't just wake up one day, hitch the boat and then drive, la, la, la, across the ocean to the Chicken Ranch.
You have to be prepared and armed with common sense and maybe some help from your friends.
And now a word from the book of disclaimers, chapter of lost at sea......

Re: Newport Halibut
Here's what I got, (I think it is pretty safe);
A 14 ft. row boat with new oars
Sturdy Sticks with Mitchell 300s
Worms for bait on pre-tied leaders
3 good rowers that can average 5 mph
3 cases of beer for fuel
What do you guys think?

Re: Newport Halibut
You'll do fine (as long as you don't run out of gas...I mean beer).
It's the boats with the one way (or 1/2 way) motors that are in trouble!

Re: Newport Halibut
BW,
5 mph = approx. 7 hour one way trip
Since you have no room for halibut you'll need to drag them beside the boat, thus creating more drag for your return trip so lets assume a 10 hour return.
That = 17 hour round trip.
3 cases of beer = 72 beers = 24 per rower minus the captain
That equates to less than 1.5 beers per person/per hour. Your going to need more beer storage.
I have a better idea. We'll fill your 14ft. boat with beer/ice and tow it behind my boat to the hali grounds!
Edit: P.s. please bring the pre-tied worms.

Re: Newport Halibut
I decided to stick to salmon for that weekend. I didn't consider the beers per hour. I guess I wouldn't have had enough fuel. That and I got a ride with a charter out of Garibaldi for supplying him with his bait for halibut and crab for the year. I am driving there Thursday night and going out on Friday, then driving down to Newport Friday night to go for salmon on Saturday and Sunday. Usually he just gives me fillets but I am taking him up on a trip this time. We had a blast in our boat last year over the 4th of July weekend. I am hoping to do it for two different long weekends this year.
I was also hoping to get a trip for My Dad, Brother and I to go Tuna Fishing. We have a 20 ft. Blue water that does good out there but not that good. I would be willing to pay more than our share of gas and costs for a trip out for the TUNA I have heard so much about. If any of you Tuna captains are feeling generous we would make it worth it to you. E-mail me if this sounds good to any of you. Hopefully I will meet some of you Salty Dogs someday. Thank You, Jesse
