Default Boat engines will require catalytic converters.

The agency predicts that manufacturers will turn to catalytic converters to meet the new standards.

When do big rigs (tugs, dozers etc.) have to follow this type of standard? I see huge black clouds from all kinds of industrial equipment.

Recently TRI-MET had to install exhaust recycling on there buses
A system that takes exhaust from the muffler and reburns it
Also it has a neat little light on the dash that tells when the system fails

Maybe you didn't read the entire article guys.

The press release says that "the rule opens another chapter in EPA's success story of curbing emissions from non-road sources. EPA has recently set stringent emission standards for farm and construction equipment, off-road recreational vehicles, and for locomotives and commercial marine sources."

It's kind of a good news, bad news story. The good news is that auto emissions have been drastically reduced so that smog is weaker as a result. The bad news is that gas lawn equipment, charcoal grills, and boat motors are now the biggest manageable source of pollutants to target next. I'm actually lad to see it. surely someone else is old enough to remember the haze of two stroke smoke that would form over the head of Multnomah channel on a calm day in April. Now, with most people running a 4 stroke that complies with the CARB standards, the air is clean.

But I love the smell of a two stroke. I wish someone would make a two stroke air freshener for my truck.

Curious how that is going to work. Seems the USCG wants gas I/O engines to have wet exhaust to keep heat down in the engine bay. Exhaust bellows would melt too.
Those two won't go together at all!

Somebody has pushed the EPA too far.

There is just something about that smell, isn't there.

Soon they will go to tier 3, which will need exhaust treatment. Engines installed now are tier 2. When equipment is re powered or replaced cleaner engines are required.
Currently putting 30,000 horsepower of tier 2 diesel in a boat in Portland, California is the leader in phasing out older engines.

For light gas engines in small boats a cat would probably go in the outdrive eh.

Do like the castor bean oil smoke from two strokes. And the pretty rainbows of fuel /oil behind the 25:1 mix boats.
