Default Colder water proponents

I know that this runs counter to the Tunaholic mantra, but some of us nearshore types are praying to the Gods of Upwellings for colder water. This warm water is really hurting the salmon fishing. But the current water predicament reminds me of a story...I used to run a 40 footer longliner/troller off the coast. One trip I hired a buddy to be my puller for the 5-day trip. We charged to Heceta Banks for halibut but it was totally belly-up. We ended up with one stinkin' halibut for a day and a half of running gear. So, being the wiley skipper, I made the decision to switch over to salmon gear, even though the water was very warm. Salmon was belly-up too and we got one salmon for a day of trolling. Not wanting to be accused of being inflexible, we decided to utilize the never-used tuna gear that came with the boat. So, westward we went until we got about 60 miles offshore. In the water went the tuna gear and north we charged. After a few hours of burning diesel, one line looked funny and, lo and behold, we had a tuna!!! We searched and searched for more but made sure our course didn't vary too much so as not to put us farther away from our home port of Newport. When we hit the dock with one tuna, one halibut, and one salmon, as pay, my puller got his choice of fish. He was not amused and thought he should get more for baiting up a couple thousand hooks. Am I a tunaholic? No. Have I caught a tuna? I have. One...

TyeeTom ... I agree about the upwelling. It is the engine that drives all the offshore fisheries.

With warm weather here at last, the heat low building in the valley and high pressure offshore ... we are poised for a little NW wind and the upwelling that comes with it.

If you have caught a Tuna, you are way ahead of some of our neophytes. Sorry your trip did not go as planned. You should have caught quite a few. They run in packs and I fish hard after that first fish hits the deck, his buddies are out there nearby.

Yes, a NW wind will cool 'er down pretty quick.
Take a look at the buoy right off Blanco. Check out the water temp trend. Cape Blanco buoy.

Tom, I envy you. You came up short one fish from an Oregon Grand Slam. Just needed a lingcod. Too bad it was on commercial gear...
