bad ammo warning/check

We bought a box of new Winchester shells today for my dad's rifle at S.W. in Salem. At 39.00 dollars I thought "these better be good." When I opened the box at home (they say you can't open them there) there was visible power around the bullet (where it meets the neck) and one of the fancy red tips was off. Just thought you might want to pop open your boxes of new ammo. It would be a real bummer if we got all the way to JohnDay only to find out we had bad ammo.

$39.00?? I just got a new rifle and the bullets are $70 per box - YIKES!!!

I was at S.W. buying my $50.00 300 WSM ammo (my rifle shoots it too good to try anything else) and complaining until the guy down the isle from me mentioned the price for his 30-378 Weatherby.
$104.00 per box of 20. Ouch..... Most Weatherby ammo was at least $75.00 a box.... I starting reloading for handgun a few months ago, and will now get started on getting a rifle press and working up my rifle loads.

30-30 has gone from 6.99 a box for Remington on sale 3 yrs ago, to about 14.99 now...

Update... Went and returned the box of shells to S.W. and was told to go and get another box but to take a look. After going through several boxes, it seems this was a bigger problem than just 1 bad box. Many of the shells in different boxes showed the same powder around the neck issue. Somehow they were not crimped properly. Take a close look at your shells before heading out in the next weeks.
