Default colors of plastics

Have done a lot of fishing for black sea bass, and bottomfish. Have my own opinions about my favorite colors of jig tails (grubs worms etc.) What are yours?

Any color you want, as long as it's rootbeer. I think this color imitates a crustacean. I have a frend that pours scampis and swim baits in rootbeer (translucent brown with gold glitter)with a red stripe downt the middle. He calls it Crustacean Sensation.

Motor Oil body with Chartreuse tails and Flourescent Red body with Chartreuse tails both work realy well nearshore. Pearl White with glow body and Motor oil tails works well in deeper water. You can get all of the stuff to pour your own from lurecraft.com

Fish iron....I started a few years back and haven't gone back to plastic. I use 1 oz. darts in shallow water and heavier jigs in deeper water. They outfish plastics 2:1!

Fishmstr,

I have to agree with you on the darts sometimes. But when the current is ripping I think the jigs with plastics work better.

I've poured 2oz. lead type of darts for some of the charters and they are killer at times.

My number one best selling CT grub up and down the coast is white. Doesn't mean it is the best catcher though. #2 is a custom color which is a combination of motor oil and root beer. I've known some salty dogs over the years that wouldn't go out ling fishing with them. Black is a good popular color and producer also.

Prior to my time here in Depoe Bay (10 years ago) the charters used to take 6" CT grubs (worms) in the clear and dye them with Ritz kelly green dye and that was the hot set-up. Still is a great color but most of them use my chovy minnow now that is basically a copy of a cocahoe minnow.

I still normally use the shad. Many good effective colors in the shads, chovy's and cocahoes.

And some times in deeper water or during the winter months the good old standard torpedo sinker with a treble or double hook on it and a shrimp fly or two above it seems to fish as well as anything.

The darts sure catch the kelp greenling for some reason. Think we caught 11 one trip and 13 another before the greenling weren't included in the rockfish bag limit.
